But in fairness, Trump — being the jackass that he is — intentionally obstructed the return of the documents, fought the return of the documents, and lied about the return of the documents.

If this was Left v Right, why wasn’t there an indictment against Pence — who had documents BUT COOPERATED with the government for the swift return of them?

Trump does this to himself, because of his proclivity to be obstreperous on every level.

Because Pence isn't perceived as the threat Trump is.

The two biggest threats are perceived as Trump and DeSantis. Both have been threatened with indictments.

It’s flip or flop time for him, now. DOJ is as nasty as nasty can be (that’s not a political hit, that is a factual statement on how they operate).

And Trump could have avoided this by simply returning all the docs and cooperating. But he didn't. He defied a subpoena, lied on an affidavit, and intentionally moved the docs to avoid turning them over. Trump has nobody to blame but himself.

Had Biden or Pence not cooperated, lied on affidavits, and intentionally withheld docs too, I would want them indicted too. But that's not what happened. They both returned everything, and then invited the FBI to conduct a complete search without needing a subpoena and/or warrant.

    Regarding Judge Cannon:

How important a role could Judge Aileen Cannon play?
U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon has been initially assigned the case, and she has a huge role to play, including whether to set a trial date before the November 2024 presidential election.

Trial judges can affect the timing and shape of cases in many ways. They can rule on motions to dismiss counts or the entire indictment, decide what evidence is admitted or excluded, and address a host of other critical questions.

Cannon’s rulings generally will be subject to appeal and review by a higher court, and her decision delaying the Justice Department’s access to Trump’s search warrant evidence was reversed last year. But such litigation could add months of delays or might have to wait until after trial, dragging out the process to 2025 or longer.

Trump’s defense will probably want to delay a trial until then, while prosecutors might want to push for the case to be resolved well before the winner of the GOP presidential nomination is decided next summer. Trump and his lawyers already face a March trial date in a New York state fraud case, and could face further criminal charges in investigations brought by state prosecutors in Georgia and the special counsel’s office into whether Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election result violated the law.

Not yet. The referenced article states that he's not cooperating.

"Once the surveillance footage was turned over, however, Nauta changed his story, CNN previously reported, and, after changing attorneys, the aide stopped talking to investigators all together last fall."

I absolutely see the point, but I don’t buy it. This was an independent prosecutor beholden to nobody. He couldn’t be a normal, stand-up citizen in such a basic ask of cooperating for the return of government property. Why?!?! Trump has always held himself above all rules, and maybe he just went too far with sensitive information.

Trump wasn’t reigned in entirely, because he still committed other obvious crimes in his manic post-election crime spree. Frankly we have no idea of all the cockamamie schemes Trump was pushing to illegally seize power. We saw the crazy notes about “insurrection act” and the efforts to have the military “seize voting machines”. Those are things that didn’t happen. We also know criminal things that DID happen. We know of the Georgia phone call and those efforts to “find” votes, and obviously know the end result of 1/6, “It’s gonna be wild”. I suspect we only know the tip of the iceberg as to those activities.

Pushing to seize voting machines is definitely banana republic stuff. Completely crazy. Fortunately that didn’t happen.

I’m not sure how prosecuting for crimes caught red handed, and where the defendant takes a hostile position (lying vs. cooperating) constitutes a Banana Republic. The way Trump attacks the rule of law and failed to be forthright, in effect he left them no choice but to move ahead and charge him on the documents. Now they have him on tape in ‘21 bragging about having them and also admitted he wasn’t supposed to! I mean come the freak on! Banana Republic. LMAO. Maybe consider that you rallied behind a lunatic. I’m still waiting on those 1/6 related charges.

You’re literally quoting QOP strategy. Not just observed, but overtly stated as recently as leading Republicans commenting on how Gym Jordan’s phone investigations are hurting Joe Biden’s poll numbers.

But then we know every Republican accusation is in fact, a confession.

The point of these investigations is to bring justice to an arch criminal, and his minion criminals, to protect our country from future criminals being successful where this bumbling idiot failed.

That is the whole reason we have laws. To punish those who break them, as a disincentive for others to break the law.

If you know, the first thing about German history, you will know that Hitler tried a coup exactly the way Trump dead. Hitler’s first attempt failed, just as Trump stood. Germany did not prosecute, Hitler, and so he came back and did it again. Only the second time, it’s exceeded. And you saw what that got us.

In the history of the world, all failed coup’s that are not prosecuted, become second attempts, and often successful after they’ve learned from their mistakes on the first attempt.

America is better than that. We are prosecuting our criminals who tried to overthrow the United States government on January 6. And we are going to prosecute the arch criminal who tried to overturn the election, who led the coup to overthrow the United States government, who cheated on his taxes, who committed election finance fraud, who committed acts of espionage in violating the classified records laws, etc. Just like we impeach him for leading an insurrection, and for extorting a foreign nation to try to help him rig an election.

I mean, if only one of these major investigations of multiple felonies was in place, maybe you could claim, with no evidence, that it was just a big conspiracy. It would never hold up, but at least you can claim it for a while. But how can any sane adult see this many investigations, this many indictments, this many crimes, with this many mountains of evidence known through the public record, with this many crimes committed literally on live television in broad daylight…And still think that is all made up?

And you are the group that say the Democrats are incompetent and can’t govern. Which one is it? It’s just like your criticisms of Biden. On the one hand, you say he is a doddering old fool with dementia who is unfit for office, and at the same time you say he is the mastermind spearheading the biggest and most airtight conspiracy in the history of the world.

How can these completely impossible and mutually exclusive realities exist at the same time in your brain?

The only way you would have any point is if there were no evidence for these indictments. And there are mountains of evidence. You just choose to pretend they don’t exist. Because you are in a cult.

This is one of the more significant stories in a decade full of them. I hate what I have to endure on this thread from our regular misanthropes just to keep up with thoughtful perspectives of other posters.

So now we need to tear the whole system down to protect Trump.

There is no logic, facts or reasonable arguments when talking to a cult member. There is only verbal fellatio and kool-aid drinking.

Beware the purple flavor stirred up in a giant barrel.

He likes using what clearly seems to be an intelligent and deep-thinking mind to arrive at prior-determined partisan talking points.

THIS attitude is what's wrong in America today. To repeatedly trash our Department of Justice is outrageous and shows the pernicious effect Trump and his spineless acolytes have had on our system of government. There is ZERO basis to reflexively defend Trump without reading the indictment and hearing the evidence. To do so displays bias of the worst sort.

Have you considered that one of the main reasons so many of us hate Trump is because he's broken countless laws for decades and always escaped true repercussions because of his name and his money, and therefore we're celebrating this result not because we "want him out" at all costs, but because it appears that he may finally face consequences for his entitled and dangerous actions.
