    Of course they were.
But the abortion bill, the LBTGQ stuff, the book flaps, the Disney fight, the NAACP ban (however odd), and his national profile being raised so that the people who would be traveling to FL heard about this stuff almost all happened post November 2022.
It may still not matter and number may still go up, just saying this year will be far more indicative of whether there’s an impact or not.

Tell your friend that she need not worry. If she lives here then she well knows The Orlando Slantinel’s bias and reporting methods. She, like most of the people here, only buy it if they have a puppy in the house. Most of us don’t even use it to line the floor any more when we filet fish. It could quite appropriately be called a sewer of journalism. Larry Guest, anyone?

The convention business down here at OCCC is strong and will stay that way. Rest assured that The Orlando Slantinel won’t get back to us when this spot is filled by someone else in the next few days, if not already.

So it's more of the "but this time we are serious" that DeSantis is awful, as opposed to last time when they said he was the devil?

I just posted the update April 2023 data from an NBC affiliate. Florida is doing much better than most of its liberal counterparts.

The people who thought he was the devil were mostly the Dems in Florida. They don’t travel to the state, they’re already there. Or a tiny number of political junkies who truly pay attention.
The people outside of the state, the ones that travel there, have only really gotten to know who he is over the last 6 or 8 months, which coincides with all the things I mentioned. Just after the election last November he had a lead on Trump, how’s that going? It’s clear he’s made name for himself finally, and it isn’t a good one. At least as of now.

Seems odd that organizations would pull out of a state that is in the top 5 for lowest hate crimes per 1M people.

It'll be hard to win that debate when Ron D drops that tidbit of info on the American people.

    Truth is greater than narrative.

Yeah, its getting old about this BS. Florida is not unique compared to other states. All these lazy articles are to gem up voters to get pissed now that we are getting closer to the election.
How are these idiots making money? They are being paid by whom? IMO, if you want to be a LLC that publishes articles, you need to publicly disclose where there income in coming from. The voters deserve to know. Some of these outfits may be funded by foreign adversaries like China/Iran/Russia or countries that have funding tied to a particular candidate or party...

OK, so if FL's tourism numbers don't decline, what will you say then?

That’s hilarious! Of course tourism has increased since the covid shutdown. Everything has increased since then. Jeez!

Of course no one wants to admit that. It goes way against painting DeSantis as the boogey man. He has made some decisions that I disagree on but when I think of the alternative(CA or NY) I would never leave FL for there. There is a reason FL had the highest population growth rate last year.

Or Florida’s law enforcement is doing a poor job reporting, and dealing with hate crimes.

The exact same thing I’m saying today? I didn’t make a claim that it would or wouldn't impact it, only that next year will be a better barometer. Most people don’t care enough about politics to let it change their plans so I am certainly not expecting a massive drop.
If there is any impact though, conventions would be where it would come because companies have to worry about public and internal image. Which is why this article is interesting but not proof of much yet.

There were a lot of liberal to moderate posters cautiously optimistic about DeSantis in 2018, definitely more of those than sounding the alarm. I never cared for him, but he lost his marbles in 2020, like many Republicans. Started with the anti-protesting bill and escalated. Now with the supermajority he gained from his hand-picked map, its been open season for right-wing bills.

So if there is a continued rise in tourism you will keep saying that DeSantis's politics are causing harm to FL's tourism and convention business? That doesn't sound like a smart conclusion.

Millions of people are going to come to Disney every year, I'm going to conclude that's because they like to see men wearing dresses.
