2A will most certainly be modified, but you and I will be long gone before that happens; hopefully not due to a shooting. Humanity will evolve from this barbaric shoot 'em up crap we're living in.

    1. Enact national red flag laws with a database. Somw Conservatives will hate this - but Florida has proven this works to save lives.
    2. Anyone caught with an illegally owned gun- 5 years in prison no questions asked. Caught using an illegally owned gun in a crime- ten years in prison.
    3. Abolish NFA and replace with mandatory training and licenses for different levels of gun purchases. Handgun, hunting rifles with magazine of no more than 5, sport rifles with magazines of up to 15, etc…
    4. Gun license( from mandatory training) must be on your persons at all times a firearm is on you. Massive (10,000.00) fine if not.
    Just my ideas.

This would have been a great post had you just come back and said "it wasn't a gang. I made a mistake, my bad."

What, are you a lib? None of that has any chance in hell. Lesser laws have been rolled back in recent years.

All good ideas of course. But with the political makeup of the right that’s never happening until people on the right (the part of the 70% that support gun reform) start voting out the NRA beholden clowns and the gun crazies.

I agree with you SOMEWHAT. And I doubt anyone will ever consider me
Liberal… but part ( only part) of the problem is that some on the right are unreasonable and are given a platform. Not too long ago there was a group calling for banning ALL guns on a political news talk show.. given a platform and supported by the host.
Hell yeah I’m coming for your AR-15, Oregon ( maybe Washington?)just banned the sale of semi automatic sporting rifles, trying to pass a law that enables people to sue the gun manufacturer for how their guns are used, and ridiculous pistol brace rule, stupid stupid silencer tax/rule. SBR tax and rule…Politicians and the ATF over stepped by ALOT the push back has been greater than any thought it would be… but once that ball got rolling it wasn’t gonna stop easily. I would add a fifth point to my original post to include homers idea of documentation on page 4.

Shooting statistics vs abortion statistics. Those cherry picking topics.

60% suicide, 15-30% gang (couldn’t find good data) half of all murders occur in 2% of counties.
50+% by pill within 2 weeks, 8 month two weeks, zero.

We have lots of terrible data in this country that doesn’t require misconstruing it, and yet.

Doesn't deal with the problem? There's nothing we can do. First, there are too many guns in circulation already. How are you going to deal with that? Gun confiscation takes place on a daily basis by LE and it doesn't put a dent in the number of guns out there. Secondly, we have no control over the upbringing of these people that have become animals. And that's what they are... animals. How do you deal with someone who takes his anger out on someone by shooting them? There is NOTHING normal about that type of behavior. "People age out of violence". What? You must live in the world you wish things were like.

Remember back when the Saturday night specials got all the bad press. Then Regan, Bradley and HCI. Same thing, there were some very reasonable proposals put forth, but then members were recorded saying that their goal was all guns through death of a thousand cuts. Resulted in entrenched asshats on each side

No that's this world. You can check any statistics you like, there are a lot more people 18-30 that commit violent crimes than people 65-80.

And I think calling people animals doesn't do anyone any a service, but I suppose that's permission to write people off permanently.

Interesting that the author juxtaposes "gun homicides" and "total homicides." It's not entirely clear which that 13% figure is attributed to. Nonetheless, gang homicides might not be the catch-all that some purport. Guns are a major problem. From the article:

Contrary to Lott’s repeated claim that the U.S. has a relatively high homicide rate because of “drug gangs,” most gun homicides are not related to gang activity. According to the National Gang Center, the government agency responsible for cataloging gang violence, there was an average of fewer than 2,000 gang homicides annually from 2007 to 2012. During roughly the same time period (2007 to 2011), the Federal Bureau of Investigation estimated an average of more than 15,500 homicides annually across the United States, indicating that gang-related homicides were approximately 13% total homicides annually. The Bureau of Justice Statistics finds the number of gang-related homicides to be even lower. In 2008, the government agency identified 960 homicides, accounting for 6% of all homicides that year.

I would add prescription medicine to the list and active recreational drug use to the list (with identified drug(s))

I’m in favor of bringing back the assault weapons ban personally. But all those are separate issues really. No one thing is a magic panacea.

Like if we did all 4 things you suggest, in totality that would obviously be substantively better than JUST an outright assault weapons ban by itself. Assault weapon ban on its own wouldn’t really solve anything if handguns are an open carry free for all and the red flag laws aren’t there for the troubled/mentally ill.

I think this gets into definitional issues. Saying Gang when meaning those involved in criminal activity. A small percentage of drug dealers and robbers would be involved in or documented as gang members. Just a catchall phrase. I am also guilty of misusing it.

Criminal activity, Domestic and mentally ill are the drivers, bigly.

This mindset is part of the problem.
Over a long period of time.
Interesting how you normalize the abnormal number of guns in the U.S. but find gun violence to be abnormal.
A majority of murders are committed by people between the ages of 10 and 40.

This. The statistics generally point to gun crimes being disproportionately young black males shooting other young black males. I think many lump this type of violence into the gang violence catchall regardless of if it was gang related activity, drug related activity, etc. Black males make up more than half of all gun homicide victims. They also tend to be the group that is most affected by poverty, income inequality, lack of opportunity, housing risk, and underperforming schools, which are the actual root causes.

Conservatives generally have no problem with a war on drugs, border control, etc yet when it comes to gun reforms (not bans) its always "there's too many in circulation " to even try to start curbing the issue....
