    They being who?

Perhaps the city should have increased the sales taxes there or the property taxes in the city and surrounding suburbs, to pay for the thing that directly affects its residents.
They only have had 30-40 years to fix it after all..

Certainly they have some, but when does it fall to the people directly in charge? The local leaders appear to have been completely inept for decades…

The city. The city is not allowed to increase taxes in Mississippi (even just within their boundaries) without the state legislature approving it. The city approved it. They sent it to the state legislature, who turned it down.

The state has plenty of blame in this instance. Make no mistake. But the problem originated with the local officials being inept and corrupt. To just pass the blame after decades of mismanagement and then to cry racism… no.

They appear to have been inept? So you're just guessing. You don't know the city's fiscal situation with what had to be a huge decrease in tax revenues with a 25% drop in the population (much of it White flight). But even if they were inept, at some point the state needed to step in. States fund infrastructure all the time. Why are the feds now paying for it?

Same as why the fed help anytime there’s a catastrophe, it’s a major health issue.

Incorrect! It’s because the money the feds and blue states give to fund to the shithole poverty stricken state of Mississippi go anywhere but to fund infrastructure in black ares of said shithole state.

So you’re saying the city can’t raise property taxes?

Also it seems like in 2011 the legislature allowed Jackson to add an additional 1% sales tax to directly fund water and sewer repairs.
    https://www.enterprise-journal.com/...kson-can-spend-its-local-option-63dd81139e27e

“On Thursday, the Mississippi House passed House Bill 1168 which would revise the use of revenue from the City of Jackson’s municipal option special sales tax. After heavy debate on the House floor, Representatives passed the bill by a vote of 76-41, with two amendments failing by a voice vote.

Under the legislation, the money from the city’s 1% local sales tax would be solely used to pay the cost of repairs, upgrades and improvements to the municipality’s water system and related infrastructure.

During the 2011 Regular Session of the Mississippi Legislature, a bill was passed to authorize the City of Jackson to impose a Special Sales Tax of 1% on any person engaging in business in the city for the purpose of funding water, sewer, road, and bridge repair. The tax applies to those activities taxed at the rate of 7% or more under the Mississippi Sales Tax Law. The Mayor and the City Council of Jackson adopted, by resolution, their intent to levy the tax as the result of the city wide election held Tuesday, January 14, 2014. This tax became effective March 1, 2014.

The Jackson, Mississippi sales tax is 8%, consisting of 7% Mississippi state sales tax and 1% Jackson local sales taxes.

State Representative Trey Lamar (R), House Ways and Means Committee Chairman, said that from 2014-2022, the tax has generated about $120 million. “

That tax was approved in 2011 and it seems like they’ve collected about $120 million.

See my post above. They collected an extra $120 million over an 8 year period, they are either inept, corrupt or both.

And you sure are quickly blaming the white flight for their woes.

I guess people leaving are racists because they don’t want to live in a crap hole. Makes sense why people are leaving San Fran.

Not without the state authorizing a special district.

That was not strictly for the water system. It was for infrastructure in general. $15 million a year allocated to all infrastructure isn't exactly a massive amount for a city that size. That is basically a road project each year. They asked for additional funds just for water and were turned down.

It was an extra “15 million a year” from the extra sales tax.
And they could have raised the milage rates on property taxes as well. Just supports the idea the local leaders did a crap job.

The white flight is a big part of it. You don't think losing a quarter of its population in 40 years is a factor? As for the 1% sales tax increase, that doesn't make up for losing (at least) 25% of tax revenues from the population loss.

Why the loss of population. Give reasons? Did industry leave? Did crime rise to unlivable levels? What caused the population decrease. Jackson is a nowhere city. I know it’s the capital but it is nowhere in a nowhere state. Money and power has all shifted to the coast. You can blame racists all you want but give some evidence, some proof.

People pay taxes. When there's fewer people there's less tax revenue. As for why people left Jackson, you tell me. The population went from 64% White to 78% Black.

Maybe the crime increased and the jobs decreased.
In the real world everything isn’t attributed to racism.

I have no idea… Lost of industry, crime spike, poorly run city/mismanaged infrastructure, raising home prices, plenty of possibilities….but I’m not the one calling the people that left racist. If you want to make that claim provide some evidence/proof.

It's Mississippi, historically one of the most racist states in the country and where all sorts of atrocities occurred. But that doesn't really matter for this debate. The feds are having to bail Mississippi out because Mississippi won't do it itself.

That's because all the conservative White racists left the city, leaving Blacks (who as we know tend to be Democrats) as the large majority. The Republican racists that run the state (governor and legislature) are not interested in spending money to help Black people, so the Feds have to step in. That's how it works in Mississippi.”

nope… don’t try to move the goalposts. You blamed it on white (affluent) racist moving out of Jackson. I’m asking for proof of this statement. Evidence it was racism that caused the decline in the white population. I’ve offered length of alternative reasons that could have been the reason for population decline. You have offered zero evidence for your assertion it was racism.
