The political calculation is that young voters continued to increase their voting share in most states in 2022. Not in Florida. Just the opposite.

This is supposed to get them back to the polls. Don't know if I agree, but that is the thought process. Which is why I don't think the FSC will allow it on the ballot. They will come up with something

I'm also concerned that the Court will find a way to muck it up or kill it. Will the amendment allow for new growers and dispensaries and will those be capped or based upon market forces? Will it be more like getting a liquor license or will it just expand the medical marijuana framework so people can bypass getting a doctor's note? This was part of the concern with medical marijuana going back years - that it might ultimately delay recreational legalization once the initial oligopoly gets established.

Yep, a buddy of mine works there and said John Morgan started laying the groundwork for the dispensary infrastructure about 6 years ago.

My wife is in the nursery industry and yeah, the groundwork for this has been known and coming down the pipeline for years. Lots of connected folks are well set up to make loads of money.

This is what I am trying to figure out. Are those who made early investments for the amendment or against it? Are they happy expanding the market to recreational or do they make more if they keep the status quo under the medical marijuana framework? It's not obvious to me but sure someone knows.

From the side of the nurseries and growers, all for it obviously. Because, unless things have changed, it's limited licensing to grow. Not sure on the dispensaries side of things.

I imagine the people against this are mostly older folks and the Christian right? Rock and hard place.

Perhaps, but I am on the Christian "right" and cant for the life of me understand why its illegal in our big pharma culture.

    Oh wait. Thats why.

    Legalize it. Tax it. Win/win.

I dont think its about that at all. Cannabis has a lot of investors and financial backing, its just capitalism. Sadly, this ballot drive is far more organized and professional than the abortion one that looks like it might flop unless they get their shit together. I think that comes down to the money behind the weed, really.

The existing dispensaries really need to get recreational use passed because they are hemorrhaging money. Trueleaf, the biggest one in Florida, has been driving the initiative and pouring money into it.

He’s against it and has already sucked his AG to try and fight it. He’s determined that pot falls against his conservative agenda and he will not back it.

In Florida, medical marijuana requires complete vertical integration - from farm to bong (or gummy). The licensee must grow, manufacture, and dispense.

Agreed. He doesn’t want this or the abortion referendum on the ballot in 2024. It would drive turnout in a way that would not be good for him.

It’s the “Free State of Florida” so, of course, he opposes this personal freedom. He will let you know when you can have your freedom and what it will be.
