Autocracy in a Trump second term

Evidence? Speculation?

Lack of respect for separation of powers? Well... good thing this administration respects separation of powers.

 

Trump has already said in the past week, he wants to get in and leave the country in good hands for a Republican successor to take over in 4 years. My guess is he wins and DeSantis will be his veep. And then DeSantis will rule over you for 8 more years. So you have 12 years of authoritarianism (at least) to look forward to. DeSantis is young, so maybe Trump changes the Constitution to abolish term limits and then DeSantis can carry out a culture war against everything you hold dearly over the course of decades. Might as well embrace it now while you can. Fall in line, bend the knee. Kiss the ring of your dear leader and be proud to be an American.

 

They live in the same state. Are you predicting that Trump will change his residency?

 

Thankfully not a majority, however there is a subset that would love to have their orange emperor.

 

Although it surprised me until I researched the issue the president and vice president can be from the same state. That being said there is no way that Trump will ask DeSantis to be his running mate. Thanks to his Narcissistic Personality Disorder Trump cannot abide by anyone challenging him and although I despise the Orange One he is actually correct when he takes credit for the success of Meatball Ron. Keep in mind that DeSantis was running second in the polls for the Republican nomination for governor until Trump endorsed him in 2018 and even DeSantis own ad campaign in the 2018 election both in the primary and in the general election was largely based on his endorsement by Trump. In simple terms Trump will never doing anything to help someone who has had the audacity to challenge him. Still predicting that unless she decides to run for the Senate Kari Lake will be Trump's running mate.

 

All anyone has to do is look at autocratic leaders from the past to see there’s a real risk in that. Don’t take my word for it, ask Muammar Gaddafi.

No it isn’t. The mistake is in thinking only the autocrat supporters will have guns. Gun ownership would have to be banned, and it would have to be the republicans that would ban them. We all know that wouldn’t happen. Another mistake is in thinking assassins only exist on the right, but there are highly skilled extremists on the left as well. We’ll never see an autocratic government in the United States because even the right knows it would put their safety at risk.

 

Under the Constitution as originally drafted that would definitely have been the case. Although it's not completely clear it's probably not the case now since under the 12th Amendment the electors vote for the president and vice president as a single ticket rather than separately.

 

Although this dates back over 50 years, it was open carry by the leftist Black Panthers that motivated conservatives in California to support the Mulford Act, a law in California banning open carry that was signed by then Gov. Reagan and supported by the NRA.

Although in recent years it's been the right that's been supporting the notion of armed ad hoc citizen militias that could easily change to include doctrinaire leftists.

Maybe, but given the disappointing midterm results for republicans because of the MAGA candidates losing races, Biden signing over 350 bipartisan bills, and McCarthy working with Biden and passing the debt limit despite objections from MAGA republicans, I see the MAGA movement losing ground and influence.

 

Because he will lose in a national election if he even gets there.

I still think he never gets that far.
Lagal issues, better opposition within his party, fatigue etc may prevent him from even making it far down the road.

 

Unless the coming indictments take him down, he will most likely win the nomination.
