No, I guess you missed the part where I said “inappropriate.”

Pornography is just an easy example. And the point is, I guess if a state bans pornography in public school libraries, that state has “book bans.”

But pornography is far from the only thing these schools remove. There’s all sorts of books that are appropriate or inappropriate for kids.

The Bible is filled with pornography and all kinds of heinous acts being committed, but I’m sure he’s just fine with that one staying on book shelves.

 

Someone has to. The question is whom.

I don’t think one side is acting like Nazis just because they draw the line at a different place or they think someone else has authority to make that decision.

I think it’s fair to think practically speaking the statute is too broad, and the legislature should tighten that up. That doesn’t make the Legislature or supporters of this law “Nazis.”

2. There are children’s adaptations of the Bible and I’d be happy with requiring public school children’s libraries to only include children’s Bibles or child-appropriate Bibles.

Regarding insurance, I think this is exactly the wrong move


NEW ORLEANS — Louisiana and nine other states filed a lawsuit against the federal government Thursday to block sharp increases in national flood insurance rates that are slated to be phased in over the coming years, saying the steeper price could cost some people their homes.

Dozens of local Louisiana governments and flood control districts also are plaintiffs in the lawsuit, which was filed in U.S. district court in New Orleans. The Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Emergency Management Agency are among the defendants.


I am of the opinion, as stated above, that we need to begin signaling (through price) rear insuring dense construction in many areas is no longer feasible. FEMA subsidized insurance has created perverse incentives, especially continually rebuilding high end homes on the coast.

This appears to be an attempt to nationalize the property and casualty market risk completely.

Neither is pornography. That doesn’t make it appropriate, nor does it mean that the state should offer the book in a middle school public library.

And it especially doesn’t mean that a middle school teacher should offer her class a book like this.

It’s inappropriate and creepy. If a kid wants access to a book like this, there are public libraries, Amazon, Barnes and Nobles if you’re old school… all sorts of places. Even in Florida, kids can take a book like this to school and talk about it with their friends. The school just can’t supply it or instruct on it. And that’s a good thing.

 

I think Florida parents need to follow this example. Let them reap what they sow. As others have pointed out, the bible is full of violence and sex.

The Good Book is being treated like a bad book in Utah after a parent frustrated by efforts to ban materials from schools convinced a suburban district that some Bible verses were too vulgar or violent for younger children.
And the Book of Mormon could be next.
The 72,000-student Davis School District north of Salt Lake City removed the Bible from its elementary and middle schools while keeping it in high schools after a committee reviewed the scripture in response to a parental complaint. The district has removed other titles, including Sherman Alexie’s “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian” and John Green’s “Looking for Alaska,” following a 2022 state law requiring districts to include parents in decisions over what constitutes “sensitive material.”
