Another win for President Biden. President Biden once again shows he can reach across the aisle to come to an agreement with the pubs while ticking off the radicals on the far right and left. https://www.cnbc.com/2023/05/31/debt-ceiling-bill-house-vote.html
too bad they cut back the funding to the IRS, that is one area where they make more than they spend. But if you are going to give Biden credit, you have to give it to McCarthy too. It took two to tango
Fake conservatives agree to fake spending cuts. Deal will increase mandatory spending ~5%, increase military spending ~3%, and maintain current non-military discretionary spending at post-COVID levels. No real cuts to see here. Conservatives have been sold out once again! - Rand Paul
Surprised by both Biden and McCarthy. Wasn't sure either side could compromise anymore, so at least that element was a nice to see.
They cut back $20B of the $80B I believe over 10 years. So they kept 75% of the funding and now the issue is hopefully behind us.
Talking wins, like the Media, keeping score point by point, is what is wrong with politics. The people, I guess, are winners because elected officials actually did their job? That is one very low bar. We can argue bits and pieces, like student loan nonsense, or look at mandatory outlays over time. Or we can fat budget shame.
The far right and far left are littered with out-and-out traitors. How could any "representative" of the people vote against a bill which in effect is a vote for crashing the U.S. economy? This eleventh-hour bill, like it or not, was the only way to avoid such a catastrophe. Now let's see how many traitors are infesting the Senate.
I am thinking the percentages in the senate will be about the same. Some fringey not liking it. I really don’t like the bone that manchin got for West Virginia in the deal but it’s all up or down.
I think he was very clear: Biden said: “I have been clear that the only path forward is a bipartisan compromise that can earn the support of both parties. This agreement meets that test.” Most democrats and republicans think he got the better of the deal. Work requirements for SNAP for able bodied people raised from 50 to 55 (tiny group) Increased SNAP funding for homeless and veterans (needed) Shifted $20B in IRS funding to non defense funding (left $60B in place) Cancels unused COVID funds (seems smart) Loan repayments for school restart Keeps loan forgiveness in place Keeps climate spending in place Keeps Medicare, Medicaid, and SS intact (despite McCarthy’s whining it was off the table.. for now) Infrastructure and Inflation ACTs are left intact (less the IRS piece) Default is off the table I’d say Biden licked them.
Now the House should get rid of McCarthy as speaker for helping to save the economy. How worthless can he get?
His back was against the wall and he had no choice. McCarthy also had to get a deal done. Side note I was shocked to know that people still weren’t required to pay their student loans due to covid. Considering how great the economy is now….
Biden: I'll meet with McCarthy — but not on debt limit “President Joe Biden said Wednesday that he is open to meeting again with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy — but would not give in to the Republican’s demand for negotiations on the debt limit. “Happy to meet with McCarthy,” Biden said at the end of a brief press conference at the White House. “But not on whether or not the debt limit gets extended. That’s not negotiable.” While the president’s position hasn’t changed – he has consistently said he won’t negotiate on the debt limit — Wednesday’s successful House vote will put pressure on the White House to re-engage. The 217-215 vote advanced a package that consists of deep spending cuts and provisions rolling back some of Biden’s key legislative accomplishments.” Seems like Biden had to negotiate, it wasn’t his choice so to say he was such a great unifier is really a bit much. They both had to come to the table. Not sure how Biden licked anyone, maybe his afternoon pudding cup..
You highlighted him saying he wont negotiate away extending the cap… they extended the cap to 2025. He didn’t say he wouldn’t negotiate period. Thats fact. Whether he got the better deal is all opinion for sure. It’s mine though.
