Which side of the Berlin wall was fair, and which side of the Berlin wall was not fair?

Which side of the Berlin Wall was equal, and which side of the Berlin Wall was not equal?

Hopefully, that clearly settles which of the two we prefer here in the United States. Learn the lessons of history.

Hamlet was a girl in last years Shakespeare Fest. I love to see old tropes and stories mixed up a bit. Certainly didn’t take away from the play. Litterary license is a thing. Did anyone complain when Tarantino completley changed WW2 in Inglorious Bastarts or in One upon a time in Hollywood. No; those are extreme changes. God forbid a traditional white character is played by a Black. No one complained when American Indians were played by white men in the shows I grew up on. That’s alright;?they are white. Racists don’t change their spots.

Black Americans suffered uniquely in this country, but I'm not sure why you think Black people are the only group I care about being represented.

You've brought up several times how Hispanic Americans are a far larger group than Black Americans. From what I can tell, it's about 6% difference. Significant, but I think you may be overstating that.

You believe that you're under attack because you're a straight White man. As a straight White man, I don't feel that way. I think most straight White men who don't share your politics don't feel that way either. You probably have more in common on that front with conservative Hispanic men (many of whom are racially White, support more traditional gender roles, less likely to be agnostic or atheist etc.) than you do with White, non Hispanic men living in a White liberal place like Vermont.

I think you place way too much importance on race and ethnicity than on politics/values/faith as a proxy for the kind of culture you want to live in. Miami-Dade is almost 70% Hispanic and just re-elected DeSantis by a double digit margin. The Mayor of the City of Miami is a Republican. The fact that you plan to flee Florida is interesting to me given that many Republicans see Florida as a model for the country and think things are moving in the right direction. If Hispanics were all left-wingers, I could better understand your view, but it's just an interesting dynamic to me.

Uh, lots of people complained and still do. And that complaint was well justified. There were reasons for that kind of casting back then but no real excuses. I would say for the most part that sort of thing does not happen anymore. And the exceptions that come to mind don’t involve white people but rather East Asian or multiracial people who “look” like they could be from one of the tribes, such as Kelsey Asbille in Yellowstone. Personally, I wouldn’t even allow that if I was in charge of the decision. A Lakota woman should be played by a Lakota woman or at least a woman from a related tribe.

Reservation Dogs and The English only cast Native Americans in those roles.

I don't have a problem with literary license. Literary license is fine, but the consumer has the right to walk when literary license is phony. A lot of movies these days are made as if they have been pre-handed a rubric of political correctness before the story is even written, and then the story is molded to get a passing grade on the rubric. When the story feels manufactured to appease a political correctness rubric, consumer license means we don't have to like movies that are made that way. We can see authentic stories, and then we can see political correctness driving a movie script.

Looks like the current movie made attempts to be more faithful to HC Andersen’s original than did the 1989 animated feature. Thread.

I know this will change the minds of the detractors, who are motivated not by race but solely by aesthetic concerns over fealty to the original canon. It’s who they ate

Wow, to this part of the article.
Talk about not knowing your history while lecturing other people on not knowing theirs. Though, to his unintended point, I suppose one way to achieve “racial harmony” is to kill all of the other races in your lands. It might be embarrassing today, but it’s true: after winning the uprising against France, the black population of Haiti systematically committed literal genocide of the remaining white, mixed, and Arawak population of its half of Hispaniola. In one particularly horrifying incident, the Haitian authorities successfully managed to lure back a large group of white farmers who taken refuge in the U.S. and murdered them all as soon as they as got them back to Haiti (a good summary of the Revolution and the bloody aftermath is described in James Michener’s Caribbean, Chapter “The Tortured Land,” if anyone is interested). This is why Haiti’s population today looks so dramatically different from the Dominican Republic despite having roughly similar demographics in the late 1700s. My point is the same as the author’s, that real history is ugly, violent, and complex, absent the clearly good and bad guys of fairy tales. But the truth is, people don’t take their young kids to fairy tale movies in order to expose them to ugly, violent, and complex truths about history.

So I’ve read movie cost 250m and another 150m in marketing worldwide. All in 400m. It’s grossed 326m. Not sure how much of that goes to theaters etc but is that considered a success ?

my 6yo asked to go see it. All 4 of us went. Only only option was the 3D version so my 3yo tapped out and fell asleep in about 20 minutes. After an hour my 6yo said he was reallly bored so we left. My kids prob too young for this movie with only a seagull and crab that are animated and the rest of characters people ( that’s boring to him ). No way we could have made 2+ hours.

I don’t mind at all in terms of fiction. Black mermaid, who cares? Mexican Lilo from Lilo and Stitch? No problem. White dude playing basketball and hustling people? Cool deal.

    Historical figures are different
Black George Washington, that would be weird. So would a white MLK Jr.
