Do we still have three scholarships to give? Seems like it's getting late to fill out the roster, though we would mostly be getting bench depth. That depth, though, might be essential, even if just for practice.
Yes, still three. Plenty of portal guys still out there. Also heavily in the overseas market. We don't necessarily have to get 13 on campus, but I don't love our perimeter depth right now at all. Only four guys really, unless you think Haugh and Jarvis can legitimately play wing.
As I previously said. I would take Pullin and call it a day. 11 players is plenty, especially when it’s a coach who likes to go with an 8 or 9 player rotation.
after looking over what he has done in the past I would say 12 is a better fit to me, he would play 9 double digit minutes and 3 more over 8 minutes a game on the avg so he would rather have a healthy rotation. But is there 2 more out there that he considers SEC level type players?
Eight or nine guys that are happy to play the way the coach wants are plenty. With the persistent win now pressure and contrast against teams doing better a bad fit doesn't help the team, coach or newly hired player.
Perhaps, but we shouldn't be content exiting recruiting/portal season with three scholarships to give. Those extra three players help fill out practice scrimmages and both challenge and support the other players. We don't want to be competing against the conference with a roster three players fewer that our opponents. There's a sustainability issue.
Tough spot. We likely have all 200 minutes per game on scholarship already, so it's hard to lure someone else here, and also hard to bring in a stud (if that's even a possibility) and have to realign with existing players. I'm not sure how we navigate that, but 3 is too many. I agree. I'm ok with some extra ships for an amazing 24 class, but only 10 seems unnecessarily light.
I wouldn't mind using the remaining scholarships on high school guys that are projects and know that they'll be waiting a year or two before they break into the regular rotation. Guys that have time to develop tend to know a system inside and out and therefore have value. You build a solid program on guys that stay for multiple seasons.
And that's the rub. We could really use a backup ballhandler and a wing who can shoot. But if there were guys available we liked, we would have pounced on them by now, I suspect. At this stage, we are probably doing our due diligence with overseas prospects, while waiting to see if any grad transfers hit the market.
TG went after Tylor Perry. When he didn’t get him, he apparently went hard after Glover and didn’t get him. He had the small guard come in last weekend I believe, and he is going after Pullin, who I am assuming will withdraw from the draft today. There are a few other really good point guards still out there. I would rather not get a wing unless the point guard search fails. Too many players and too few minutes makes for some unhappy players. We already have 4 players who can play the wing in Richard, Kugel, Jarvis and Haugh.
Golden said Jarvis is a 4/5, not a 3. And Haugh hasn’t played the 3 at all on the travel circuit, let alone as a prep, from what I understand. Nor have I heard once that we went after Glover hard. Was a last second pitch really. Completely agree on the need for a ball handler since Clayton can play off the ball and we aren’t sure what we have in Aberdeen. But with 3 slots, a one and a wing are not mutually exclusive.
Here’s one article that talks about the Gators’ pursuit of Glover. I am pretty sure there are more. Samford Transfer Ques Glover Commits to BYU - Vanquish The Foe
A few points: Clearly, TG didn’t go after Glover until after Perry committed to Kansas State. However, it appears that he went hard for Glover after that. The article I attached above gives a good explanation of what Glover brings to the table, and the 2 video clips show some scoring capabilities and accompanying excitement that few, if any, other college players have. It’s sickening to watch those videos knowing that we could have had this kid for 4 or 5 years. As to Jarvis and Haugh playing the 3, they would be the options there after Kugel and Richard. I have watched several of Haugh’s high school games, and he can defend that position and has the ballhandling and passing skills to play the position. I have not watched much of Jarvis, but he has the athletic ability to play the position. Over and out.
These are Pullin's "transfer portal" highlights, so the most recent body of work. The assists begin at 1:05 and this is the key for his bid to be the Gator PG. He's long enough to be able to pass over/around defenders. Watch the no-look pass at 1:21. Keep in mind these highlights are against lesser competition, but what I see is a good floater, can drive and create space in the lane for a pull up, but most importantly can distribute and is a willing distributor. The immediate Q in my mind is whether Pullin becomes the starting PG, or if that is Clayton. I said a while back that Clayton might be the starting 2. If Pullin can man the PG, we might now have a depth chart of: PG: Pullin (Sr), , Clayton (Jr), Aberdeen (So) SG: Clayton (Jr), ?????? SF: Kugel (So), Richard (Jr), Haugh (Fr) PF: Samuel (Sr), Jarvis (Sr), Szymczyk (So), Condon (Fr) C: Handlogten (So), Szymczyk (So), Condon (Fr) Haugh is probably more of a 4, but he needs to beef up and until then is a bit of a tweener. Defense at the 3 would be a huge challenge for Haugh in the conference. Again, though, I don't expect Haugh or Condon to do much in conference year one. Who is your backup at the two? Richard?
Updated OP Wow. Can't believe it. I certainly didn't think we would get another starting level player. Hopefully this sits well with Clayton.
Clayton might still start. Even if he doesn't, he'll get starters' minutes. He's too good to not use.I CTG has said in the past that optimally, he'd have a regular rotation of 8 or 9 guys. But he's never had this much talent on a team either. I expect the regular rotation will be 9 or 10, with 1 or 2 more getting a couple of minutes. And there will be games we want to go big and other games where we want to go small. I like Pullin's assist highlights. He uses his size well at the point and hits his guy as soon as there's a crease.
