I'm not surprised about the reviews. Despite the top-notch production values, it was a pedestrian product. (Also, I just realized how strange it is to have grown men (the pirates) fighting children.

No one is stopping you from buying tucking bathing suits for your children.
    I’m happy for you.

    Got through one paragraph.

Everything is social engineering in the new live-action version of The Little Mermaid. It changes Hans Christian Andersen’s Danish fairy tale — a touchstone of Western culture — and revokes its preeminence, reworking its amphibious Scandinavian heroine’s image to resemble that of a biracial American teenager (Ariel, played by pop singer Halle Bailey) that suits contemporary, racialized politics.

Disney already charged the original with the 1989 animated feature, as it and everyone else does with all canonical fables, which are always updated and reinterpreted. Here is Wiki’s summary of the conclusion of HCA’s original

The prince and princess celebrate their new marriage aboard a wedding ship, and the Little Mermaid's heart breaks. She thinks of all that she has sacrificed and of all the pain she has endured for the prince. She despairs, thinking of the death that awaits her, but before dawn, her sisters rise out of the water and bring her a dagger that the Sea Witch has given them in exchange for their long, beautiful hair. If the Little Mermaid kills the prince and lets his blood drip on her feet, she will become a mermaid once more, all her suffering will end, and she will live out her full life in the ocean with her family. However, the Little Mermaid cannot bring herself to kill the sleeping prince lying with his new wife, and she throws the dagger and herself off the ship into the water just as dawn breaks.

Her body dissolves into foam, but instead of ceasing to exist, she feels the warm sun and discovers that she has turned into a luminous and ethereal earthbound spirit, a daughter of the air. As the Little Mermaid ascends into the atmosphere, she is greeted by other daughters, who tell her she has become like them because she strove with all her heart to obtain an immortal soul. Because of her selflessness, she is given the chance to earn her own soul by doing good deeds for mankind for 300 years, and she will one day rise up into Heaven.

Don’t think that version would have played well with the Jamaican singing crab.

That piece is just stupid and racist, dressed up in Ben Shapiro like faux classics intellectualism

And yet they pass off their opinion as fact, even when they don't watch said films.

No wonder they aren't taken seriously by anyone.

It won’t beat the original. They never do. I have no interest in seeing another redo Disney flop trying to appease the libbies.

I don't care what race The Little Mermaid or Lord of the rings characters are because I wouldn't watch either movie anyway but we all know Superman is white.

The problem is that some people will read that and automatically agree. Shameful. Everything can't be red or blue. I wish this crap would stop from both sides.

My granddaughter is biracial. She loves Ariel who is light skinned. And the frozen girls, both white. That’s her in my picture.

I’m sure she will like the remake of The Little Mermaid also, no matter the color of the actress.

Thankfully Ari doesn’t just see the color of a persons skin as being important. I/we taught her color doesn’t matter, just character. She loves everyone.

Look, I see it too. More AAs in commercials. I just don’t get why it really matters. Some of my best friends are AA and super good people. If more of the races got together, talked, and hung out with each other we’d all be better off. My exposure to AAs at age 5 taught me there really isn’t a difference. Bad people and good people are what they are no matter their color.

I thought it was lame. The Peter Pan wasn’t very dynamic.

That’s great, but apparently to a lot of people having diverse casts or minority leads instead of all white casts is “woke”, which is apparently the root of all evil (or communist, or something).

That National Review article is hilarious. Instead of National Review, I think National Embarrassment is more like it. Same people who were undoubtedly raised seeing false imagery of middle Eastern Jesus with European characteristics - blonde hair and blue eyes - freaking out about “sabotaging western culture” because a fictional fairy tale mermaid is depicted as black? You can’t make that stuff up. Zero self awareness.

Cognitive dissonance for the Right. The Little Mermaid seems to be facing the racist backlash in China they were hoping for here.

Midweek, The Global Times, a state-controlled tabloid paper, lashed out at Disney and accused it of lowering the film’s potential in China by casting a Black actor in the role.

“Many Chinese netizens said that like ‘Snow White’ the image of the mermaid princess in Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tales has long been rooted in their hearts and it takes a leap of imagination to accept the new cast.” The same editorial accused Disney of “political correctness” – an argument similar to the “woke” accusations made by political Right-Wing in the U.S. – and said that the film would likely not perform well in East Asian markets.
