Discrimination is discrimination, some is legal some isn't. But government has the power to outlaw certain kinds of discrimination (I say certain because there's probably an exception somewhere I'm not thinking of).

I assume that you wouldn't object to a mandate from the state telling businesses that they couldn't impose dress codes on their customers since it would be discriminating against customers who do not want comply with the dress codes.

Democrats favor the civil rights act, yes. I know it's a thorn for folks in your circle, but liberals are generally okay with restricting the freedom to be racist in a commercial setting.

The state has the power to pick and choose protected classes. How do we know that? Because they've done that before and we live under such laws to this day.
