NF quality took a downturn when they were bought back in the day. Still fine for most users...

I usually go REI over both North Face and Patagonia simply because their line is usually cheaper. I don't buy much anymore because I'm getting a little old for backpacking but I probably have about 5K worth of stuff in my backpack hanging on the bedroom wall.

Was gonna say. They got bought around 2000 by Vanity Fare (lol) and the manufacturing moved. Quality went way down. At the time I was working at an outdoor store and saw it all first hand. Columbia shit the bed as well, imo. People buying North Face weren't mountaineers anymore. Just private school kids who needed that North Face logo on their Denali jacket.

I also agree with folks saying Patagonia is a good brand. I've got some 20 year old capilene base layers I still wear. And a nice jacket.

Personally I've always been a Mountain Hardwear or Arcteryx guy, when it came to actual high performance gear.

I know nothing about REI brand. I worked at a small, independent store.

I know people always think things get worse but I’ve been hiking for years and everything is lighter and more comfortable now than it was. My pack is 18lbs fully loaded without water and food and it’s not totally bare as it includes power for phones and stuff. I swear 15 years ago my stuff was 30lbs. My north face shoes are great. But everyone has their own favorites.

My wife & I were married in 1996. We registered at REI. We still have 2 backpacks, 1 headlamp & 2 (mostly retired) sleeping bags from our wedding. Got married in Tx & are fixxin' to go camp a few nights in Big Bend for old time's sake.

My first section hike on the AT was in 1966 we did 160miles from Springer Mt to Fontana Dam if I remember right our backpacks weighed 45lbs without food or water and we were considered ultralight back then. I just took my 2018 backpack off the wall and weighed it, 10 lbs that included my trekking poles but my extra clothes & gopro are not in the backpack. I'm guessing those items probably weigh 3 or 4 lbs. You are right what was considered ultralight a few years back would be ungodly heavy by today's standards. I think a base weight of 10 lbs is about the standard for ultralight today.

I was just in one of their flagship stores in Seattle looking for a nice jacket. Expensive, but the quality looked pretty good to me.

I anticipate Northface is very aware of maga's various boycotts of products and threats against employees. And Northface proceeded with the ad anyway based on their market research.

This is a colo-centric attitude to think this would be a colo-centric joke.

    C'mon, doc. Get ski woke.

I'll never forget when I was working at said outdoor store and they just came out with 2 ply gore tex. They were like, here's a fully waterproof, breathable jacket and it weighs like 6oz...

Anyone ask Boebert if conservatives are outraged by whores in general, and specifically ones getting knocked up when they are 16 by other 16 year olds. I mean, being all about family values and all??? Or maybe child abuse?? How about that, does that make conservatives upset?

Apparently conservatives are in favor of those things since she is the self-appointed spokes-whore/moron for conservatives.

I was already not buying North Face, because it’s shit. This commercial just verified that. Politics aside, what a horrific ad to run for an outdoor apparel company. I expect their brand will continue to diminish as the quality went years ago.

Lightest I can get my pack is 13.5lbs but I like to carry a few days of phone battery, cords for phone and watch, a satellite connection and cord, tent lamp in addition to headlight, extra water friendly shoes, extra socks, extra underwear and a sleep outfit. All that adds up to put me at 18. But when you’re out for 5-8 days it’s worth the weight to me. Maybe if I was doing the whole thing instead of a week at a time I’d feel differently.

I go light on food since you’re rarely 3 days from replenishment most places on AT.
