Claiming a term and being able to demonstrate that the term is appropriate is clearly a difference.

are you under the impression that businesses weren't closed in Florida? Longer than necessary? how is that determined? by deaths? how many % points of death rate is okay to be determined longer than necessary?

I think the term "authoritarian" is when the government substitutes itself for the private decision making when there is no arguable state interest. So, for something like prevention of the spread of diseases, the state interest is obvious (as, I pointed out, this is a raison d'etre for governments). For preventing diversity training, there is no state interest.

Authoritarianism is just a word that is now used to describe a Republican who does something that addresses the culture war. It's become the new "racism."

Now Democrats do things to address the culture war and they're just "doing their job." They're "protecting rights."

It's all a bunch of my team is right your team is wrong bullshit.

    Not those particularly, no.

But I think you're kind of illustrating my point when you lump every single person who was outside the Capitol that day in with "those people."

If the justice department thinks like you, DeSantis would be right to at least look at it.

If that's the case, then why is everyone crying about mean evil DeSantis hurting poor helpless defenseless Disney?

Homeboy just gave Democrats the blueprint to beat guys like Trump and DeSantis to the point that this wave of that kind of politician will probably go away for a long time. And that's all you can ask for because none of this is ever completely gone.

Now ask me if Democrats will follow this plan. :D

Actually I don’t see anyone crying about DeSantis. If anything we’ve been laughing and joking about how a cartoon mouse has been kicking DeSantis butt.

As an Orange County resident, do you want to get stuck with the bill/bonds? You do realize why Reedy Creek was put there in the first place, right?

Neither Orange nor Osceola county could afford the infrastructure cost for the things that would be necessary for Disney World to come to fruition. They take care of their own infrastructure and permitting and do a far better job than the government could do.

Not to mention the bond issues as they relate to contract law.

I could ask the same about the people who've been claiming he really stuck it to Disney. Some might say putting your cronies in charge by changing the law because you got mad at something Disney said is enough to raise eyebrows.

They seem to keep flipping between:
    1. DeSantis is destroying Disney in typical Mussolini fashion
    2. Disney is humiliating DeSantis.

While simultaneously acting like failed attempts at authoritarianism on their own side should be dismissed as irrelevant.

It's all very confusing and incoherent.

DeSantis is a one trick pony: culture war issues. He will have limited appeal across the aisle and to independent voters.

A good thread on DeSantis' use of government power for personal gain. He is holding up the state budget so that he can shake down lobbyists for donations and legislators for endorsement at the threat he will utilize his line item veto power against them if they don't.

Old argument. Everyone has known for decades democrats don’t know how to message, vacillating between ignoring, or drone on about how “their friends across the aisle may have misspoke.” It’s far more effective to repeat a lie than to explain the truth.

I appreciate that, but I still think you're putting it a little too kindly. They've been getting in bed with the wrong people since around at least 2012 and have been enabling those people since then to seize power over all sorts of institutions of influence. In the interest of political correctness, they put people who punish truth (and dissent) in positions of real power and cultural power. Those people accelerated the rate in which the culture shifted to the left and now we're seeing the backlash and the fallout.

The culture wars didn't start in 2016. 2016 was just a turning point where somebody convincingly said that we need to hold the line. And hate him all you want, he was right.
