A special district doesn't grant First Amendment rights, the corporation has them by virtue of the Constitution. What is improper is punishing a corporation by attempting to take away its authority previously granted as retribution for exercising its right to free speech under the First Amendment.

He did both (and, in fact, did not just attack mandating vaccine but mandated the inability of somebody else to mandate vaccines as a condition of employment). Here is an example of him attacking vaccines:

Florida governor seeks grand jury investigation into Covid vaccines

Here is a pretty good primer on the document that Ladapo put together that could charitably be called academic fraud.

Report: Florida officials cut key data from vaccine study

The issue is that he wishes to use state power to try to "win." Thus, why he, a Republican, needs to use state power to attack business interests, as he basically thinks they will lose if he fails to do so as the businesses are now on the other side of his "culture war."

You do not campaign for every person running. You have the option to pick and choose. He chose to campaign for people like Lake.

Declaring yourself a "sanctuary city" in no way pretends that there is no illegal immigration, only that it is not the local law enforcement's job to enforce immigration law, which up until recently, was not even a criminal matter. They do so because it helps them in their other law enforcement capacities, such as making it easier and more likely to solve violent and property crimes due to increased witness cooperation.

Beyond that, the actions of DeSantis was fundamentally dehumanizing, which was the goal. A human being has certain ability to do things like select where they live based upon jobs and housing availability, access to family, familiarity with an area, amenities in an area for certain cultural/national groups, etc. Shipping them as if they were cargo intentionally ignores their free will and ability to do so, especially when the people were lied to about job availability.

Finally, the people he did this to were not illegal immigrants, despite his outright lie that they were. Asylum seeking is a legal form of immigration.

Yayteam! He only criticizes the outgroup in a disingenuous manner. Awesome.

You aren’t paying attention then. He has called for setting up a state run committee and grand jury to investigate vaccine makers making false claims about the vaccine efficacy and also about their supposed danger that is unadulterated bullshit.

Again you must be living in a conservative bubble. There have been threads in here. Lapado is a guy who was hired by UF med school, likely under pressure fromDesantis and made FL attorney general, and has made false statements about the vaccines and published “research “ on the vaccines that has been proven fraudulent. It’s a disgrace an embarrassment that UF is associated with him.

Pokiticians fighting culture wars is important to you. It isn’t to me, on either side. I’d say probably half of the country in the middle is somewhere around where I stand on this.

He made a point to campaign for the most fringe candidates. He wants to be to the right of Trump and appeal to the election deniers and anti vaxxers.

initially supporters were saying is was somewhat moderate on abortion with a 15 week plan but then he doubled down with a 6 week ban thst a vast majority of Americans don’t support.

You asked for me on my thoughts. I gave them to you. Now you come back with pro DeSantis propoganda and talking points. Whatever.

Desantis as a Reaganesque communicator is just laughable. He is terrible, and proves it again and again. You are obviously infatuated with this guy. Good for you.

DeSantis is an authoritarian, plain and simple. He's also a vindictive person, and uses his power in government to attack people and businesses.

That being said - We can debate whether he is authoritarian or fighting authoritarians until the cows come home. A lot of that depends on where you sit and how much you can rationalize his behavior as "defending". Depending on what media you consume, you will get one or the other side of that argument.

    Here's what really matters though:
No One Is Talking About What Ron DeSantis Has Actually Done to Florida
55 Things You Need to Know About Ron DeSantis -read from 38 down

It gives you an idea of the kind of policy he will focus on in the white house.

The bottom line though - is that he has been working in a state with a super majority. He hasn't had to make deals, everything is a nail and he is a hammer. He won't be able to do that in the white house, so I'm not confident he will actually get all that much done, but I DO worry that he will try to concentrate as much power as possible in the oval office, and that is dangerous...

To the point of the thread, if you look at polling history, Trump has historically outperformed polling while Republicans have, in recent (i.e., during Trump's time) history, underperformed their polling. This is because Trump appeals to a certain set of marginally connected voters, who are not generally polled at high rates. Those voters are not policy driven. They are motivated by the infantile Tweets and behavior. That is what they want. So I think Democrats should not, in any way, take Trump lightly, even if he is somebody who should, by his merits, be taken lightly.

Well you can start with understanding what the purpose of the Reedy Creek District was supposed to be for originally and how it has been abused by Disney for the last 50 years with the acquiescence (until now) of the Florida state government. It's been a long time coming that Reedy Creek was abolished and quite frankly Disney made it easy for them to do.

Special districts in this state are created and abolished by the state government. Reedy Creek, because it is so old, was grandfathered in through many new laws that have restricted what special districts can do. Disney was supposed to build an actual city on this land and that is why the state government allowed them permission to build a nuclear power plant and an airport on the property. Then Walt Disney died and the company said Eff it, let's just build theme parks. The Magic Kingdom was only built there in the first place because Walt needed the board's support for the EPCOT project. EPCOT, Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow.

So Disney decided that they were going to release a statement about how they were going to "fight to repeal" a law that the state passed.

The state is controlled by Republicans, but this statement allowed them to put together the political capital to finally at long last move on the district.

You can hate DeSantis all you want, but any reasonable Floridian regardless of party should be ecstatic that Reedy Creek District is gone now.

    1) Vaccines are and have been widely mandated. We were in a global pandemic.
    2) A proven liar, and quack. Do your research.
    3) There is no war. You need not be afraid. There are plenty of actual problems to work upon without purposely dividing the country for political posturing.
    4) Fine. Matters not to me.
    5) Government should not and need not make that decision for women.
    6) So do government his way or you'll regret it ..... see Disney. Those people weren't even in Fl. just a photo op for his campaign
    7) See #4

The hilarious part of that picture is that multiple of those entities have actually spoken out very directly against DeSantis. I mean, they literally have a picture of Disney on there as a supporter of DeSantis. Not to mention groups like Lincoln Project, who have produced Anti-DeSantis ads, and David Frum, who regularly writes stuff against DeSantis.

It is an amazing display of the Conservative id though, so there is that.

Who is the "authority" that gets to decide what is "necessary" in order to save lives and when it becomes "authoritarianism?"

One could easily argue that shutting business during a pandemic is not authoritarianism because containing the spread of communicable diseases is literally one of the raison d'etre for governments in the first place. Meanwhile, preventing a business from setting behavioral conditions of employment is not.
