Particularly since he "processed out" about 80% of the existing scholarship players. Scumbag doesn't quite cover it.
The spring game is just for the coaches to make evaluations. How many times does some one have a great spring game and then you hardly see them play on Sat.? I must be in the minority but I enjoyed watching it. It was football.
The way I look at it, this year's spring game showed that our 2 QBs stink under any pressure. Thus, any pressure come the fall will be met with sacks and incompletions.
Awful analysis. The QBs were under a lot of pressure in the O&B game. So to conclude the QBs will "stink under any pressure" is an ignorant and probably agenda driven conclusion. For Mertz, how did he "stink"? Also, how did Mertz perform in the 2nd quarter? Hint- it was the opposite of 'stink". For those that want to bellyache about the OL, lets actually analyze the scrimmage. 9 times out of 10 we get a vanilla defense in the O&B game. This O&B game was the 1 out 10 that didn't feature a vanilla defense. With a new DQ featuring more pressure packages and man to man coverage, the defense played their standard formations with significant success. I think it was an excellent decision by CBN. A lot of young talent on defense that needed the real life reps. I feel much better about the defensive scheme, talent and depth. The talent is very young, so there will be growing pains in 2023. IMO, by 2024 UF will have a top defense and the first step in that direction was the 2023 O&B game. The counter to that is the the OL and QBs "stink"- silly... Again, look at unusual challenge of facing a pressure defense in the spring scrimmage and the six (6) starters at OC and OG. Myself, I feel a little better about Miller. He looked better than he did in the bowl game. For Mertz, I'm a Wisconsin fan, so I know him well. He probably played in the worst passing scheme in college football the last two years. I factor that in when looking at his career stats. For the O&B game, he got off to a slow start in the 1st quarter. After that, he was solid the rest of the game, especially considering the pressure he was under. Looking at the 2nd quarter in a vacuum, he was very good. I feel good about him with a full squad on offense.
Thanks Donzo - solid takes. I thought Mertz looked very serviceable in the game after a shaky start. It was also ‘down on touch’ type flag football - again a wise decision by Napier given shallow depth at key positions. More than anything else, we need decent O-line play to allow plays to develop — in the air and on the ground. We have the potential to be much improved over last year, which is all any rational fan should be expecting this season. Go Gators
Good stuff as always, Skink. The board is kinda overrun with negative hot takes, so your actual analysis is appreciated. CBN is building the program. The talent is already there on defense, it's just probably a year away from maturing. The offense is still a work in progress. The 5-star QB and adequate depth is, like the maturity on defense, still a year away.
