Napier was quoted in the Sun today that we are still pursuing a QB but that he can't "talk about the specifics". The author (and many here) speculated that it is Simmons. I certainly hope it is not a 17 year old who is skipping two years of HS football to reclassify. Regardless of how smart and capable he is, he will not help us in 2023...and creates a bit of a logjam with Lagway. Any other thoughts who we could be looking at this late in the transfer game?
I’m guessing he was counting on that cat from Coastal Carolina to actually graduate, which he failed to do. We’ve had our share of bad luck in recent years. Nothing comes easy EDIT: Grayson McCall
What’s wrong with Simmons reclassifying? He actually would replace Rashada in the the 2023 class and put us at 4 QBs on the roster with pretty good class balance.
I’m pretty sure it’s Simmons. And I don’t think the move was necessarily a way of adding a potential starter for this season. But it does fill out the QB room. This whole second portal period has been a letdown. There were just very few good options out there. In any position.
Redshirt and play in 24 so Lagway can take a shirt doesn’t sound too bad. If not, we are looking in tge portal again, Metz or Miller, or okay Lagway as a true freshman. Simmons on a shirt may be the most likely good outcome of those options.
Got to move quickly in this portal nil game. We don’t appear to be jumping at every wild opportunity. It may work just fine too. We aren’t exactly putting the final piece to a championship in place. No need to roll the dice just yet. Build it’s slowly and surely. If Lagway needs that receiver in a few years, pay up at that point.
Guys Mertz is your starter unless Miller can show to be a better game manager. Get used to it. Good or bad thats your QB. From what I am hearing on this site and others is Simmons is reclassifying and as stated by another poster he replaces Rashada to fill out the QB room unless he shows something amazing in his game, Simmons will not start '23. just my conclusion from all I'm reading and hearing of the "buzz" thats out there
He's too young and he would cause a backlog, as some other poster put it, with Lagway coming in 2024. Plus he is not what we need right now. We need a one and done with a ton of experience as a QB1 in college football.
Watched a podcast with a former Alabama Qb his name escapes me at the moment Mc-something he stated he believes Mertz could possibly be very good this season …. Hope he is right
Not available. Nothing wrong with a good qb every year. Competition is great and may the best man win the job.
What you just described is what Mertz was brought in for. Simmons isn’t too young as he turns 18 in November. Max Brown was a late addition project for 2022 and we whiffed on Rashada for 2023, so Simmons reclassifying makes perfect sense here. We should be bringing in a high 4-star or 5-star QB every year. No sense in worrying about making room for Lagway as competition makes the QB room better.
The truth is we weren't looking for a starter. I think CBN is happy with Mertz. And honestly there is only 4 QB's in college football at the power 5 level that have more starts at QB then Mertz, dude is experienced and honestly we could do alright with a guy who just makes the short to intermediate throws and doesn't make costly mistakes... a "game manager" if you may. Let the talent around him rise to the occasion too.
That IS correct... now all we need is one more QB. See how simple that is to understand, not that you don't understand per se, but others here.. It's about numbers at QB, more so than finding that one and done "unicorn" that everyone is looking for. I'd be happy with another Mertz type talent, but I know most people here think we need a better QB1 option, which as you say is probably not available. But there are other Mertz type level QBs that will become an option in the coming weeks. We need one more QB, and whomever Napier gets is fine with me.
