He has literally no chance in the primaries. He’s useful to the GOP who like to play the “see I’m not racist, I have a black friend” canard. If he had a serious chance that would be great. I just don’t see the path.

Scott may be sincere in his own beliefs, I have no reason to doubt him. But also no doubt plenty in that party are using him in that way. Also you’d think if he had integrity, as a black man you’d think he’d speak up about racial gerrymandering. But he doesn’t, so that is likely informative as well.

So you're suggesting that he won't enter? While it's possible that he makes the wise (for him) decision of waiting until the 2028 cycle to run with his ego I fully expect Meatball Ron to announce his candidacy within the next week to 10 days and his withdrawal within the next six to 10 months once reality hits. The only question is whether Ron will drop out before the Iowa caucuses or after he is trounced by Trump in the primaries.

Try as we will no white person will ever know what it’s like to wake up everyday wearing the skin of another race, but we do know to succeed despite all the obstacles is something to be admired. I think he has a great story, but what we don’t know is his experiences that led him to his mode of thinking. Is he sincere about his beliefs, or is he just looking to say the right things to win over the moderate voters? Did he really pull himself up by his own bootstraps, or did he follow in the steps of Clarence Thomas using affirmative action benefits to move up before declaring it bad for society?

    I guess we’ll find out.

There’s actually a perfect opportunity teed up for Scott to appeal to “normies”.

Tim Scott’s Governor just made a highly racially charged comment about “Hunting Democrats with Dogs”. Completely crazy rhetoric.

    Condemnation coming in 3…2…

Oh… wait… Scott endorsed that nutjob?

As I expected, this faction of the religious right is not interested in considering Tim Scott. They'd rather elect a leader with multiple divorces and kids with different women. Even being found liable for sexual abuse is preferable. Is it really about having "skin in the game" or are they worried that Scott is gay?

Interestingly, I never really thought about it until awhile back, but George Washington didn't have kids - though he reportedly helped raise Sally's. I don't know if formal adoptions were common back then, but he apparently didn't do that either. Not that I care personally; I think he turned out to be a decent president.

Tim Scott is 57, never married, no children Not to be harsh, but that's simply disqualifying

I think that focusing on tone and attitude and ignoring policy, he presents an attractive and aspirational campaign compared to one of grousing about past grievances (trump) or anger about culture (DeSantis).

edit: don’t think he gets the nomination though.

Yep, we can't all pull ourselves up by the bootstraps like George Santos.

I listened to an interview of him with Bari Weiss back in 2022. He struck me as sincere, and has a credible and impressive backstory. I think is a serious person and probably believes most of what he says.

On the plus side he really takes a positive tone and tries to avoid the doom and gloom of MAGA and stresses the need for opportunity. He admits outright 2022 was not a stolen election, and while dancing around it doesn’t explicitly endorse MAGA types.

On the negative side he doesn’t seem terribly deep policy wise, and he tends to espouse tired policies like tax cuts. He is really a big fan of education reform and talks highly of charter schools. Problem is education is such a complex issue and has left a graveyard of people trying to fix it, and from what have read charter schools are a mixed bag.

He tends to get into “Democrats / Biden bad” mode and always pivots to “both sides” when asked about Republican idiocy. However as much as I don’t like it I suspect as a Republican you have to do it.

I’d vastly prefer him over Trump or Desantis, as he seems like a person of genuine character and his glass half full outlook is refreshing. However his prescriptions would likely be mostly out of the box Republican policies, many which have failed. I’d probably prefer Nikki Haley to him because I think she has a bit more substance about her but they have a good deal of overlap.
