Mike Bianchi: Gators AD Scott Stricklin on Billy Napier: ‘Incredibly pleased with how he’s building program’

    Mike Bianchi, Orlando Sentinel
Mon, May 22, 2023 at 5:30 AM EDT

Can we please stop with the ridiculous chatter about Billy Napier being on some sort of fictional hot seat heading into just his second season at the University of Florida?

Napier’s coaching seat is far from hot.

In fact, it’s the complete opposite of hot.

I’ll even go as far as to say Billy Napier is on a relatively cool seat — as he should be.

The rest can be found and read here:

Bianchi: Gators AD Scott Stricklin on Billy Napier: 'Incredibly Pleased With How He's Building Program'

Edit: Knocking down to the 4 paragraph limit we have and adding the link for everyone.

    "His offense is traditional."
Will that win championships in 2023?

    "He makes decisions carefully."
His initial choices for co-defensive coordinators while also determined to be his own OC prove otherwise.

I like Napier as a recruiter, but I'm very concerned about his ability to coach, be the OC,
game plan, manage time-outs and run a major program at this critical time in the SEC.

    See link.
"Only three coaches in the SEC are ranked lower on the list than Napier – Missouri's Eli Drinkwitz at No. 51,
Vanderbilt's Clark Lea at No. 56 and Mississippi State's Zach Arnett at No. 68 out of 69 Power-Five head coaches."

Of course not. I’m amused you even ask that question for 2023. Are you planning on freaking out when we don’t win a championship this year? If so, then you’re a big part of the problem

Stricklin knows that his fate is directly tied to Napier's. No AD at a major college program survives two consecutive failed football hires. If you don't believe me, do your own research about fired ADs in the last 20 years. So he can only be expected to be a Napier cheerleader and say all is good even if the roof was falling.

That being said, Napier is not on the hot seat entering 2023. He will be on the hot seat entering 2024 if 2023 is a repeat of 2022. No one is expecting to compete for any championship, but a hard-nosed, prepared, fundamentally sound squad is expected. We also have to look prepared and competent, even if outclassed against UT, UGA, LSU, etc. That is not too much to ask of a second year coach who is paid what Napier is being paid. We looked completely lost in a half dozen games last year. This means week to week preparation, scheming, and game-planning wasn't there. With the amount of roster turnover we've had since Napier started, this should be much improved. Not perfect, but enough improvement to where the average fan can notice it and feel that the program is headed in the right direction.

With regards to the headlines, it's what the pundits do:

ESPN explains why Billy Napier’s seat could heat up in 2023.

Yeah, and the meteor could crash into Earth next week and kill us all.

Florida rumors: Gators’ Billy Napier on hot seat heading into 2023

    Clickbait

Top 10 coaches on the hot seat include Jimbo Fisher and Billy Napier …

Napier a Top 10 coach? I'll take it. Jimbo a Top 10 coach? Lolz.

Florida Football: Billy Napier among 7 coaches with most pressure in 2023

Well no $hit Sherlock, Florida is arguably one of the top 7 places to coach in the country. Whoever coaches there will face the pressure to win.

All that being said, Billy must show us something in 2023. A repeat of 2022 and the seat WILL get hot. It won't just be printed articles then, it will be pressure by the BullGators and boosters.

I think that's fair. I think what we all like to see is steady improvement in all phases that gives hope for the future.

    Give me a break.
The entire world knows any kind of championship is not happening this year either.
'Here in 2023' was simply referring to the state of todays' SEC competitive environment.
The implied question here being "is Napier adaptable to change like Mullen was with his personnel"?
Guess we'll find out soon enough because none of our 2023 quarterbacks can run to save their lives.

You ask a question that’s literally absurd, I give you crap for it, and you come back like of course you didn’t ask the absurd question. Whatever - if you didn’t ask the question then cool. Go Gators.

Skink believes in free speech as long as it agrees with him. But you got to love somebody who is always so negative. But he is a gator so that means a lot.

    In my head--- UF
Stopped reading when I say that bianchley wrote it.

I tired of his lectures back in the Urban Meyer days. Actually blocked him on multiple sites.

I am going to wait for season two to start and finish. I'm just a bum who can't get Napier fired (nor would I try), so I will watch my gators as much as possible.

BTW I've been patient since 2010. When am I allowed to break stuff mikey?

It’s really amusing how many people don’t seem to have anything to post except stuff like this. Am I in your head too Missouri?

Guys, all I did was push back against “Player’s” question whether Napier’s bland offense would win us any championships in 2023. OK folks, let’s take a quick look at our schedule (3rd hardest in CFB) and our opponents. Dumb question, don’t you think? Kinda pointless, except to take another small swipe at Napier. I push back - and y’all start coming out of nowhere claiming I’m acting like I “own the board”. To me this looks like a lot of thin-skinned people running back & forth between here and too hot getting all worked up over typical message board banter.

I didn’t know I could get into so many heads. It’s a freaking message board

It looks like Bianchi finally decided to write something supportive of his alma mater for a change. It’s a decent read. And I’ll applaud anyone who calls for patience amid all the irrational pressure on Billy Napier in his first season.

I know many give Mike hell but this was a resoned and well crafted article.

Lets get to the bottom line:

When was the last UF football coach to get fired in year 2?
hum the "Final Jeopardy" song.............. I'm thinking ZERO, at least, in the last 50 years.

While I don't expect much in the way of improvement this year
from 6 - 7 (and in fact could see it being worse) I'm all in with CBN. I agree with Mike. He needs time.

For me the one serious disqualifier fror CBN is recruiting. He MUST recruit at a high level. Thats the deal the way I see it. That and keeping the locker room under control and making sure the young men play hard and stay out of trouble.

By all appearances we have a good man, a high charachter coach. I personally think the pissing and moaning should be deferred to year three.
