The future with ai/deepfakes looks super bleak to me. At this point, someone could post a video of Putin saying he's declaring war on the US and missiles have been launched. By the time we figure out if its real or not, it would be too late. Just a bizarre reality.

Only if the nuclear launch codes are held by Buford and Jethro in south Louisiana. Fairly confident that US Cyber Command and the United States Air Force would not have the same reactions.

If I understand what you're saying, I think you're making my point. Someone releases an ai/deepfake of Putin declaring war and launching missiles. It's fake, but the US launches a counter attack before determining this.

If we've spent the kind of money we do on defense and this is a possibility, that's a big indictment of a lot of things

It would be too late for what? A disinformation campaign can fool the public, but it can’t fool NORAD if Russian birds aren’t actually in the air. You might have a spell of panic, which the government could easily dispel.

Fair point, I was just pulling an example out of thin air. Let's say instead someone releases an ai video of South Korea launching ballistic missiles at North Korea. Do we trust NK's technology and reaction time?

I most certainly do not. What I wonder is if NK even gets the disinformation campaign, considering almost no one has access to TV, radio, or the internet. :D

I am saying the opposite. Just because a bunch of people on Twitter think it is real, the people who matter will quickly debunk false information. In fact, US CC likely knows about it before it is released.
