The US is facing dramatic drug shortage supplies for a variety of reasons after offshoring generic drugs for decades.

Seems if we’ve learned anything the past few years, it’s that so much of this stuff (drugs, PPE, etc.) need to be made here.

How’d you like to be a cancer patient nearing the end of your treatment only to be told “sorry, no chemo left for you, you didn’t make the cut”.

Drug Shortages Near an All-Time High, Leading to Rationing

“Ryan Dwars beat pancreatic cancer in 2021, but late last year a scan showed cancerous spots on his liver. Mr. Dwars, 39 and a father of two young girls, had hoped to receive his final four doses of chemotherapy in April.
Then his doctor delivered stunning news: He didn’t make the cut of those given priority for the treatment. The light at the end of the tunnel was within sight,” Mr. Dwars, a special education teacher in Iowa City, said. “It made it even worse to be so close — and now this.”

    It’s simply disgraceful.

Without ready access to drugs Americans may see an uptick in life expectancy.

the cost of manufacturing here should replace the cost of advertising. remove the advertising tax deduction, provide an alternative offset related to domestic production lines used to fund the jobs here.

I think we can all agree that this is a bipartisan issue. We need to bring drug manufacturing back to the U.S.A..

I don’t think the 8-year old who stops receiving their lymphoma treatment had much to do with that.

It seems to be the recurring theme of his presidency.

Shortages in the drug space have been problematic since even before the pandemic, 2017 Hurricane Maria. Had no idea before then that Puerto Rico made such a large % of drugs, but they do/did and Hurricane Maria wrecked that. Unfortunately instead of moving to continental U.S., production moved more to places like India and China.

No clue what would be going on.l now. Seems like 5+ years should be long enough for these companies to sort out supply chains, even ones impacted by Maria.

    You mean your Orange God?

Ironically, almost all this was happening even before Trump emptied our shelves of toilet paper. Before the pandemic. You just weren’t paying attention.

Faced With a Drug Shortfall, Doctors Scramble to Treat Children With Cancer (Published 2019)

I don’t blame Trump either fwiw. He didn’t create that arrangement with so many drugs coming out of Puerto Rico. Nor did he do anything helpful to correct it as far as I know. It’s kind of like the baby formula situation. Seems to me private industry is dropping the ball with cost cutting and offshoring causing single points of failure and tainted product. What is the big guv fix to that?

Most of the active ingredients in the generics prescribed here come from China. If we ever went to war with us they wouldn't need to beat us with bullets they could just beat us through medication

Whew that is a relief. I saw the thread title and thought some of you would be running out of your daily fix of fentanyl and cocaine.

Of course he doesn't remember either... he just waits around all day long till it's ice-cream time. But when he feels like doing something they take away all the paper.
