Why don't people start calling these out like they are this is a gang related shooting when people don't like the rockers or cuts you are wearing and others start mouthing off stuff happens be it black white or brown.

I used to work for a large company which CEO, while in discussion with company employees agitating for peak Black Lives Matters, tentatively suggested that the best thing blacks could do was to cultivate peace in their own communities.

He was savaged. Pilloried. Shamed. Made to produce hostage videos and pay reparations. All the company’s sponsors bailed. And it was a wonder the CEO was able to retain control over the company.

What does BLM or the black community have to do with this?

Although the formal definition of a mass shooting is any incident in which three or more persons are shot to majority of Americans a mass shooting is an incident in which all of the victims several of which have been killed are innocent and the perpetrator responsible is a single person usually unrelated to the victims. Under the normal perception what happened in Augusta wouldn't meet the criteria for what most people would consider a mass shooting even if met the formal definition.

This is a multi-purpose anecdote I like to drop into any discussion where leftists are bemoaning gun violence and calling for stricter gun laws.

My specific beef with this is the constant claim to want to have honest conversation about guns yet it’s always lead with conflating statistics. This Augusta event goes under the column as ‘ mass shooting’ to continue the misleading claim about X number of mass shooting in America. Followed by gang bangers shooting it out on Saturday night in a HS parking lot labeled as a ‘school mass shooting’. With not too far behind the use of the term gun violence or gun death which not so subtly includes suicides, gun cleaning accidents etc. all purposely misleading to stir up emotion. Makes people similar to me tune out when I would otherwise be happy to engage in respectful discussions with people i disagree

Yes, that’s the issue at heart. Perceived inequal reporting of gun violence. Let’s focus on that instead of the actual gun violence.

I guess what I was getting at is this type of violence gun control isn't in play i'm sure the guns used weren't legal

    Ok, I’ll play…

Were illegal guns at one point, legal? How does a gun become illegal?

A successful gun control strategy addresses both legal and illegal guns. We cannot simply say that because illegal guns exist, that nothing can be done. If a shooting takes place with an illegal gun, it is still a gun control issue.

Ok you are correct but how do you control the illegal firearms? Were they legal to begin with? where did they come from? I want stop gaps too to stop the senseless killings but until you can control the dark side of gun purchases you cannot control the legal side.

I think people care. But this is more like the Hell's Angels story from last week. Rightly or wrong, I think people view violence between gangs/motorcycle clubs a little differently than lone wolves targeting random strangers out of revenge on society. Still tragic and horrible either way.

They shouldn't though, its all anti-social in the same way. I suppose the distinction is borne out of some kind of fatalism, the acceptance that things like suicides, accidents and domestic killings, deadly robberies, gang violence will all occur in a country flush with weapons. Its the big shocking stuff that people think is avoidable or that policy can affect, and people mostly think the other stuff wont happen to them.

It already changed with SYG in FL, including giving people involved in the sorts of violence you allude to more legal protections when involved in shootings
