They are, but not accurately. There are really two elements to that argument. Both involve preventing implantation, but in the case of the IUD, it is only theoretical. No expert really thinks it happens and there's no proof that it does, they just cannot rule it out. During the ACA contraceptive litigation, the Obama Administration had to concede legally the possibility for "conscience" protection for those that seek to use the pretext of conscience to control others. That's primarily what is being referred to when the conversation turns to "contraceptive" devices being considered abortifacients. It's misleading, at a minimum. Other contraception like "Plan B" does prevent implantation, not just in theory. If you really believe that a fertilized egg at the moment of fertilization is a human life, you can accurately call it an abortifacient. But most would not. Yes. I believe most make conception less likely and even if conception happens, it makes implantation less likely. If implantation is prevented and life begins at conception, technically a life ended that we never knew about. But it's such an early stage in development you generally don't even know it exists at that point. I also believe conception without implantation is something that naturally happens to many women and they don't know about it.
I don't really have an opinion on this. Abusing this can lead to some screwed up situations, but that applies to many over the counter drugs. Overall, as a public health issue and as an economics issue, it's really likely to be a net positive with some screwed up outcomes sprinkled in that will likely be politicized by the folks who view contraceptive pills as abortion.
We could be screwing up, big pharma isn’t making huge money on OCPs. There are literally dozens generic and the cost OTC likely won’t be much different than with and Rx.
While that is true that’s not the reason that the FDA hasn’t made it OTC yet. The biggest reason comes from the OB/GYNs. They do have some valid reasons (can make some cancers grow much faster), women maybe less likely to get routine check ups if they don’t need to see a Gyn for a yearly exam (pap smear, breast exam).
I find anti-competitive practices & the restriction of personal choice to not be a very valid reason. fwiw, I think nearly all drugs should be avail OTC to adults.
So nearly all approved drugs are OTC? That would be a total disaster. Likely pharmacies would decline to carry many medications OTC to avoid the liability.
don't know the law, but why would they be liable? If I kill myself with aspirin, a gun or vodka, I don't think the store would be liable.
Doctors don’t get paid for writing prescriptions so they have no vested interest in that regard. The rub is from the Gyns for the reasons I mentioned above. Perhaps a safer way would be higher risk women need to have an rx and lower risk would not, just spitballing here. I don’t have any skin in the game but as someone who writes scripts I wouldn’t write it for my daughters unless they had seen a Gyn and had the proper yearly exam done. That’s just me. Many here have decried those who would call into question the “experts” when it comes to covid and the covid vaccines, but now some don’t want to listen to the experts on this. Puzzling.
The trial lawyers would go after them for letting people buy “dangerous medications with deadly side effects”. Have you not seen the “blood thinner” commercials? Class action suit for a drug given as a blood thinner because some people have sever bleeding.
A change in law would most likely be needed. Was that a prescription drug or OTC? As long as accurate info is given it seems like what an adult chooses to ingest is a fundamental right. I would consult an expert & strongly suggest others do too, but freedom ain't free. Guns'll kill ya like nobodies bidness & where are the lawsuits when people off themselves via guns? USE AT YOUR OWN RISK. A basin lets anybody ski the steep gullies & the way our law's written, good luck suing the basin if you die.
Aspirin can kill you if you take a lethal dose it won’t kill you if you take the prescribed dose. If you have undiagnosed breast or uterine cancer does aspirin make it grow faster? Apples and oranges. Like I said it’s been the experts opinion not to have it OTC, but many of the same people here who have attacked other posters for calling into question covid vaccines and treatments because they weren’t experts now are questioning the experts(for whatever reason). Kinda funny.
This new ( next day, "birth control pill") pill will open the floodgates for actual abortion pills, that will be marketed as "birth control pills" in the future, and I can see that coming a mile away..
