To avoid any concerns about taxation without representation, I suppose the law could be changed so that nobody - working or not - pays any type of taxes until they're 25. But we need young people paying into the system because taxes being paid now are funding outgoing benefits. But he's not even tying voting rights to employment or productivity. He's singling out specific jobs that meet his subjective test for civic duty. On top of that, he's arguing that voting is just a privilege the government can take away as it wants and even condition the right to vote on passing a government test.

I don't see him getting much support for this. Do the conservatives concerned about the deep state really want these ivy league educated elites drafting civics tests?

 

Maybe the GOP should just come up with a platform that appealed to anyone beyond crusty ole white dudes and yokels, instead of trying to limit who can vote.

 

IF they thought they could get away with it women, LGBTQ, people of color would also lose the right to vote.

 

Just because it’s appealing doesn’t make it good or right.
Many the best things in life are not gained easily.

If you are old enough to fight for and die for your country then you can vote. Period! Or are we talking about doing away with the selective service and 18 year old age limit as well?

 

I said the same thing in a thread a few days ago. Judging a president based on approval rating is pretty silly, because, as you said, because it's appealing doesn't mean it's good or right. The type of president we need would have a low approval rating, imo

 

I think young people have more to lose if policies are defined without their input. Like climate change, most young people recognize if we don't change, it will be a much harder world to live in that an older generation won't deal with. Beyond that, an 18 yo with a minimum wage job probably pays more in taxes than Trump.

Younger people in general don’t really know much about anything. They are typically liberal and can be easily swayed. Almost too open minded at times.

I've told the story about my run in with the IRS auditor because I screwed up the taxes on my sons trust funds that made enough capital gains to require them to pay Income tax. The tax man also jumped my ass because I signed their returns for them. He said I couldn't sign their names to the returns so the next year I gave my 3 year old a crayon and showed him where to sign.

I used to think the acquisition of knowledge was a good thing. However the cable news and internet age just demonstrate that for many knowledge acquisition is merely a form of entertainment and bias confirmation and while many people have knowledge much of that knowledge is complete nonsense. One only look at Trump and the CNN town hall audience as evidence.

Ive seen no evidence that young adults are less qualified to making voting decisions than older adults.

 

The guy is a clown running a circus of a campaign, so this isn't surprising. The Constitution is pretty darn hard to amend, so I wish him luck with this undertaking.

Voting is a right. The Constitution explicitly says that in at least four amendments. Like I said, clown running a circus.
