Yep - and even if McCall had come to UF, the same usual suspects on this board would have ramped up the noise about how we will suck because he hasn't faced SEC-level defenses at Coastal Carolina, which he hasn't. Mertz would likely still be our best option for this season. Like a commercial airline pilot hitting the seatbelt button and telling the flight attendants to terminate beverage service, buckle up boys and girls, we're in for a bumpy ride!
Yeah, I just re-watched 2.5 quarters of last year's Bowl game in Vegas and what really struck me was that we had 33 players, that played in games that season, not dress for that game against OSU. And that we got torched in Special Teams play. They ran two fake punts on us for first downs... need to fix that asap. And they blocked a really slow moving punt by our punter near our goal-line. But what I did notice in that first 2 and a half quarters was that Miller was not really that bad at all, in the short time in the game. The receivers didn't do well, except for Pearsall. I have to see the rest of the game again to give a more detailed opinion on Miller, but he knew the offense and checked down to his second and third receivers in game. He will be fine next year. And in the spring game Mertz had decent statistics overall, but as we all know he and Miller will know far more about our offense when summertime comes along... and then Fall. Right now if we get a plus one and done QB, great, but if we don't then I still think one of them will be good enough to win 8 or 9 games. We shall see. I also think our defense steps up BIG-TIME this coming year. I can't wait to see them in action next season.
All the good ones were gone early or only toyed with transferring...Hartman, Leary, Pratt, Howard, McCall, etc. There were definitely plug and play QBs available at the end of the season, unfortunately we didn't end up with any of them.
Pratt was the guy BN really wanted but he stayed at Tulane the rest of those guys in my opinion no better than Mertz
Holy hell how could you watch that crapshow again? Do you also consider self immolation from time to time?
Yeah it's a shame we weren't given a HS schedule Like they gave the current mutt champs. They Play 4 OOC cupcakes including 3 in the 1st 4 weeks UT Martin, UAB, Ball state and play Georgia tech last game of season and only play Auburn and ole miss from the west. Otherwise it's just against the East teams. In fact only team on their schedule who had a winning record in SEC conference play was Tennessee. And only 4 teams :Tenn (11-2) ole miss (8-5) USCe (8-5) and UK (7-6) even had winning records overall and 3 out of the 4 were damn close to losing records too. How the hell does a team like UGA pull a Schedule like this ?
I was referencing the Twilight Zone épisode when the monster was tearing up the plane. Only captain Kirk sees the monster destroying the plane similar to à few fans at gc prognosticating gloom and doom for the football team. My response to your post maybe à little off beat, so I apologise. All of that is just to say I agree with you. Expect the unexpected. We all don't know how the season will turn out.
I could make a case against each of those guys vs Mertz.....be it system, skill set, heath concerns. And for the record, I'm not in love with Mertz either, I just think there are questions with all those guys. If you put a gun to my head I like Hartman, but he has serious injury concerns, an up and down history, and comes from a very specific offense for his skillset. Leary is a statue with no mobility and a MAJOR injury. Etc etc
I don't know how Howard could be a plug and play. He hasn't played at all to know what he is, and he will be riding the pine this year. The only one out of that group who has proved anything against some decent defenses is Hartman, but he is a big risk to not be available.
William Shatner appeared in that seminal episode of Twilight Zone three years before Star Trek. It was a master's class in overacting.
