Do moderators have discretion, by rule or otherwise, to take corrective action if one person is actively (and boastfully) antagonizing everyone else? It can't be beneficial for GC to have an individual diminish the enjoyment and learning for the rest of the participants. A few of us blocking him doesn't help nor does highlighting to him he's being antagonistic.

Yep. We can edit or delete posts. We can ban someone from a particular thread for a few days or permanently. Or ban them from Too Hot for a few days, a month or permanently.
I've never banned anyone from Too Hot, other than obvious spammers.
And, to be honest, none of the mods read every single post, so we can miss stuff.
Remember that you can report posts that you consider out of line. When you do that, it goes to the mod board where all the mods can see it and decide whether to take action.
You can also send particular mods a question or complaint.

Well in fairness they’ve pivoted to blaming mental health and the decline of family values. Ironically, those are issues liberals have been trying to address for years with objection from the right.
Kids growing up in broken homes? How about a living wage so parents don’t have to work multiple jobs and can spend more time with their kids. Naw, pull yourself up by the bootstraps like the good ol’ days and quite asking for handouts.
Mental health you say? How about universal healthcare so people can afford proper diagnoses and treatments? How about a healthcare system not tied to full time work since many who suffer from mental health issues can’t maintain employment. Naw, why should I have to pay for someone else’s medical expenses.

I’d also like a registry and a ban on high capacity magazines. But yeah - this please.

That says everything. Almost exact same language as natural disasters, which is exactly how Republican politicians now speak about mass shootings. No more avoidable than bad weather, apparently. Shameful and sickening...

Apparently pushing for affordable health care makes people want to buy guns and ammo, and kill other people. It also makes politicians demand we build more prisons and have fewer mental health facilities.

No different from their take on trade. It just shifts with the wind. 20 years ago I used to post about some of the tactics Private Equity was using to “strategically” declare BK to get out of pension plans, before closing factories and offshoring jobs to China (a practice that still happens, although probably not as much because almost every commodity product has already shifted). Even “luxury” brands make all their shit in China now. I used to always say a U.S. worker wasn’t going to compete with slave labor. I actually considered myself largely “socially liberal, fiscally conservative” then, but the volume of products shifting to China was concerning to me even as someone who believed in free markets and global trade. Several posters discussed this, and the more hostile conservatives who were all free traders then would basically call us commies for even thinking pension plans should be protected or that it shouldn’t be quite so easy to offshore.

Fast forward 20 years and how many of those formerly religiously free trade clowns are now probably throwing around “globalist” as an insult or calling people RINO’s for even talking to China? It’s like they waited until everything was too late to open their eyes, and they want to blame “the other side” instead of looking in the mirror.

The gun debate is also similar. Repealing the assault weapons ban was a huge and obvious mistake, yet… here we are. Good luck getting them to admit that, let alone roll it back.

It’s a little disappointing that even the most right of republicans like MTG are serving this up on a platter and no democrat is calling them out on it. Instead they’re digging their heels into the “gun problem”. Of course there is an issue with number of guns, but why not at least attempt to make some progress by “agreeing” that mental health is the problem and making republicans put their money where their mouths are. Get some actual legislation passed that can help the country. Will treating mental health issues or tying mental health into background checks truly solve the problem. Doubtful, but neither will thoughts and payers. It would at least be an improvement to our society. Unfortunately neither side will budge and risk giving the other points, compromise is no longer a part of American politics.

This is a very naive take. Media spends almost no time whatsoever covering the dozens of gun deaths that happen daily. Active shooter with an AR-15? Headlines for days.

Which side has accomplished anything noteworthy regarding mass shootings? I definitely lean left, but what have democrats done? Everyone deserves blame until something changes for the good, just because it’s “my team” doesn’t mean I can’t call them out as well. “Bothsideism” I warranted when both sides continue to do absolutely nothing.

Agreed. The Dems need to have some substantial legislation regarding mental health ready to go for the next time some sicko shoots up a school. Then let the GOP reject it like the shit stains they are so we can put their faux concerns about “mental health” to bed.
