Putting Trump in there for the pretense of “national security” is kind of like putting a pyromaniac in as fire chief.

But then again it probably isn’t any stupider than believing he would “drain the swamp” of corruption.

People willingly acknowledge, Trump is an ignorant wanna-be dictator who attempted to overthrow our representative democracy and, and will gleefully put him back in power to finish what he started...re-writing the country to create his hate-filled dictatorship.

It is stunning to me how stupid supposedly educated people will act because they are more driven by bigotry and hate and fear than common sense and education.

I think it's more that they've been convinced they're in an existential battle.

It's clear that no amount of facts or reason will change their minds. They have no choice but to vote for Trump.

Then that’s your prerogative to vote against DeSantis.

That's because they'd rather have a dictatorship than a democracy if democracy means they they don't always get what they want.

The pathetic thing (beyond you voting for Trump again) is that if Trump had the exact same economy you'd say it was good.

It constantly amazes me when I see people espouse views of the world so divorced from reality.

The last 13 quarters have averaged about 3% gdp growth. The prior 3 qrtrs about 2.5%.

Unemployment rate at 3.4% is the lowest in decades.

Inflation over the past 10 months has averaged 2.2% on a month over month basis.

Indeed this is a horrible economy.

You must not have a business or a 401k

I do have a 401k. My wife works for a small business that is doing gangbusters.

The total US market with dividends reinvested is marginally higher now than when Trump left office. Whatever the case I don’t judge presidential effectiveness by short term stock market movements.

I think what he said was tax the university’s endowment at 100% if they persist in AA and jacking up the costs to students.

While the idea is a joke something needs to be done about the skyrocketing costs, they certainly have gone up well about the inflation rate.

By that logic Trump isn’t being an authoritarian here as his BS is just an empty threat. A he won’t get re-elected and B he doesn’t have the power to do it and C congress wouldn’t pass any legislation to do it.

The schools with the largest endowments tend to churn out the most successful grads. Schools with poor results tend to have puny endowments. Harvard has what, over $50 Billion now? Also, any one admitted to Harvard whose family makes <$85k can now attend 100% free. How can anyone say with a straight face the most successful schools with the largest endowments are “ripping off” their students. How do these idiots think the elite schools GET those outsized endowments? (Almost all gifted from successful alumni and friends).

On the other hand, we have a guy who literally ran a sham University with endowment of $0, whose sole purpose was to grift money from gullible people looking for a get rich quick scheme. This is the guy who thinks the govt should “seize” University endowments? It would almost be bizarro world that anyone would listen, but of course we’ve seen it before. The cult listens.

I’m not defending what Trump said at all..

Most Americans feel that the cost of college has exploded out of control.
That’s one place most agree on.

Sure Harvard has a great endowment, but obviously most schools don’t otherwise people wouldn’t have 100k of debt for a BS/BA degree

While this is true, his motivations are larger than debt. His base started peeling off from college years ago, so he is telling them what they want to hear. And colleges and are viewed as the elites, so he is sticking it to them too. And he is getting out in front of DeSantis on the culture wars. And a survey a month or so ago says that only 42 percent of Americans think college is worth it, so it might not even hurt him much with independents. It’s like a five for one deal.

    You are likely right.

Depending upon the degree (if you do the math) college may not be worth it with the current costs.

The biggest ripoff schools are the for profit diploma mills. They don’t have “endowments”, they have shareholders.

I’m sure there are bottom tier private schools that have modest endowments, but also disproportionately high tuition. If they are legitimately problematic (as measured by graduates who default on student debt). The way to get at them is to cut off federal funding and federal loans (just as should be done to the shadier for-profit institutions). There is no argument to steal or “seize” privately donated funds.

Edit: of course as the poster above pointed out, and we already know. This isn’t serious policy. It’s culture war BS.

I do think too many people are being steered to colleges when trade schools, apprenticeships, the military etc. might be better options for them. Many of those jobs can earn as much as many college grads.
I also think that the net effect of those kids going is that the bottom tier schools get a whole bunch of kids who aren’t going to succeed and just rack up debt. It’s why premiums are being placed on good schools.
Then many kids, even if college is right for them, choose expensive private schools that aren’t even very good. So they rack up 50k a year in debt and don’t even graduate, or aren’t that business competitive when they do.
And then the crazy inflation of tuition, especially at private schools is a mess.
Then lastly, as a history major I am not going to crush liberal arts degrees, but way too many kids get degrees that don’t help them when they graduate with a mountain of debt.
So basically the whole college system favors kids who go to good schools and get good degrees. Who were the kids likely to succeed anyway.
