Former UF assistant coach passed away April 9 at age 90. He was Steve Spurrier's QB coach from 1964-1966 at UF. He was the UF offensive coordinator in 1969 for the high flying Reaves-Alvarez-Durrance-Rich offense that went 9-1-1 and beat SEC champ UT. He was not retained by knucklehead Doug Dickey for 1970.

He went to Dooley and Uga, then was head coach at Memphis St and Vandy. He was also the head coach at the Univ of Tampa in 1962-63.

If only ! If only UF had kept Graves and Pancoast in 1970+. Yes the 70 team would have had to reload the OL, but from there on it could have been lights out with SEC titles (my opinion).

I remember him from the time we lived in Tampa and the alumni meeting we had. A good man who helped us to many wins. Rest in peace.

    RIP.

And not to be funny, but that has to be one of the rarest surnames there is.

Dickey was stubborn stuck in his ways and not willing to adapt to his personnel.
He had all of the weapons to run a superb and efficient pass offense and was in the country's most fertile recruiting ground for skilled players to build on it.
Instead, he installed a sophisticated running game for a future first round QB to run.
We all hated it and I remain thankful that we learned our lesson and this misuse of talent would never happen again.
    Oh, wait.......

Yes, may he rest in peace.

When I got here to Fla Dickey was the coach. It's hard to explain the stupidity some coaches are possessed with. Some are just blind and stubborn to their faults. Often times a small adjustment would make all the difference. I thought Zook was a much better version of all that. "No, no this is the way we do it..." Hmmm. Self reflection is a good thing. At least Zook won at Bowden field. Ha. Dickey just drove the program into a decade of mediocrity! Anyway, nuffa that!

90 is a darn good run...

May God Bless him and his family.

    Go Gators:)

We learned a lesson?? I hope you are right.

Dickey wrecked Florida football, and then the NCAA showed up.

Replacing Graves with Dickey, was one of the most incredible mistakes our athletic department ever made.

And you know where it came from? The good ole boys in the SEC saying Uf can never win because all Florida boys want to do is go the beach and chase girls--seriously. That was the mantra back then. So we hired a retard from UT who had won there. And the Gator bowl game, before 3rd and dumb came to UF, was between Utoothless and us. We won.

Third and dumb put FSU and Miami on the map, at our expense.

Then voted to strip us of our SEC title in 1984.

Yeah. Thank God it was a long time ago. But that decade of stupidity delayed the glory years. I remember watching games at Florida field back then. We would be halfway decent between the twenties. Never could get into those red zones. Awful. Punting was popular.

Yup. You mention Dickey and I throw up in my mouth a little. Then I realize you couldn't of hired anyone that could have done a worse job...

But, moving on. Oops. Kind of hijacked Freds memorial. He'd prolly agree.

    Go Gators.:)

1976 vs Uga. We have lead. I recall it to be 4TH AND DUMB, not 3rd and dumb, in our own territory we run it, dont make it and they have very short field to score and the rest is history. Dickey made some awful decisions during games.

He somehow took a UF program coming off 9-1-1 with a high flying offense in the State of FL which had duds at fsu and miami as head coaches and promptly ran our program into the ground. So far into the ground that it was below the graves of fsu and miami.
