My only thought was, is the women's tournament smaller, i.e. fewer entries? That means smaller pot but it also means better odds.

    The article makes it plain:

“Florida law prohibits players from being discriminated against in poker tournaments. You just can’t block someone who is of legal age from playing (aside from, say, if a player is banned from the casino). Thus, as rude as it was, Hughes had every right to play in the tournament.”

Yes women understand odds as well as men, and women can read their opponents as well as men (maybe better on average). But women generally don’t bluff as aggressively as men do and are more likely to fold to a bluff. And aggression pays off in poker. That’s just an extension of larger life, men are generally more aggressive and less risk averse than women. And yes, a number of scientific studies have backed that up. Of course there are exceptions, but watch a women’s tournament on TV, it’s very different poker than an open tournament.
To the odds, even at four percent, a woman should make the final table once every three years or so. That hasn’t happened, in fact it’s happened once in over 50 years, though a few have gotten close.

If you had a Gator Poker Tournament for Alumni you couldnt bar an FSU alumni from entering it. It would be rude but not illegal. Guy was a dick.

Yet a woman wrote the book on how to play a fast, aggressive, winning game (Annie Duke)

And not coincidentally, she is also tied for the second highest finish by a woman ever in the tournament. I did say they were some exceptions.
I would still argue though that she not nearly as aggressive as some of the men are. She is more in the “controlled aggression” category. Raising blinds, picking on short stacks, betting with equity but not a made hand etc. Which isn’t a bad place to be for consistent results and I enjoy watching her play because you can see the wheels turning when she’s making decisions. But to win big prizes, big bluffs become a near necessity. She isn't as much on that train, at least not that I have seen.

So, all men should be banned BY LAWS from participating as woman?

BTW, since I mentioned Helmuth, I met and hung out with him for hours at the Kentucky Derby one year. For the most part that whole thing is a TV act. He was definitely sarcastic, but not the jerk he goes to great lengths to portray during telecasts. Probably why no one has just gone ahead and de-toothed him, they all know it's not quite that bad.

You hear that from a number of folks. Once he steps away from the table he’s a good guy. I do think at least some of it is an act, but also that he has a big ego around his abilities, which is not only needed, but largely warranted. He truly takes it personally when some idiot who has no concepts of odds, opponent ranges, game theory etc just does something brashly stupid to try and say they pwned Helmuth and lucks into a hand win.

The ironic thing for me with Phil though is that his wife is a psychiatrist at Stanford. I can only imagine what she says when he comes home, because she is likely smarter and more stable than he is.

Why is the first thing you guys think of to make a law? I know you love the government and all. If a private organization wants to host a ladies bingo or poker night, I don't think an anti-discrimination law is going to apply. Moreover if they want to let a man participate who wants to be an idiot about it, whatever, who cares.

I used to play some yes. Retired from that. My kids take up a lot of my time(that's a good thing). I have played with some absolutely great women players. Anecdotal but I couldn't get a read on this one woman and she got me on quite a few hands. But overall I would agree men are more aggressive players in poker in general. But that can be good and bad.

1 of the greatest pieces of poker advice I’ve gotten was from Annie - if you are making money off bluffing, you aren’t bluffing enough
