Every time the republicans have tried that tactic they have come out on the worse end. That is why Biden isn’t negotiating, he has the high ground.
I am 100% behind driving our debt down, but the time to do that is during the budget process... not over an artificial debt ceiling.
Absolutely and additionally if we are really serious about reducing the deficit (which we are not despite the rhetoric) we should be looking at both sides of the equation, decreasing spending or more accurately decreasing the rate of increased spending and increasing revenue. Since Walter Mondale got his butt kicked in 1984 not a single presidential candidate has suggested increasing taxes and the same is true for the overwhelming majority of candidates for Congress. President George H.W. Bush's relatively modest tax increase was probably a major factor is his electoral defeat to Bill Clinton in 1992 and Clinton's modest tax increase which actually didn't even affect most Americans was the largest single factor in the wave loss by the Democrats in 1994 midterms.
June 1 drop dead. https://thehill.com/homenews/senate/3982225-yellen-says-drop-dead-date-for-debt-ceiling-is-june-1/
During trump we were running $1T/yr overrun, that’s before Covid. Scary how it’s more acceptable by everyone to just stay in deficit mode.
Adding that in 2018 and 2019 the deficits were increasing possibly the first time in US economic history in which the deficit was increasing while the economy was growing with the unemployment rate falling during peacetime.
If the Dems cut spending this can all be solved, but the Dems will blame the Pubs for not letting them spend money we don't have... into the poor house.
When the Republicans had the House, Senate and Executive under Trump, the tax cut legislation that graciously gave to primarily wealthy households and businesses, was unfunded or balanced by spending cuts. What did we gain from the increase in deficits? At least with Democrats we are gaining infrastructure and healthcare that helps everyone.
Dems and RINOs are equally bad at this. But I don't remember the debt ceiling being an issue. You know why, because the RINOs in the congress gave the Dems everything they ask for. But yes, Trump got what he wanted but also had to settle for pork that he didn't want. It was sign it, or get nothing.
This is money that has already been spent with approval of Congress. You pay your damn debts regardless of whether you like how the money was spent.
Section Four of 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, adopted after the 1861-1865 Civil War, states that the "validity of the public debt of the United States ... shall not be questioned." Executive branch should invoke this clause in telling the whack jobs in Congress to pound sand.
Since 1960, from a quick search on google, the debt ceiling has been raised 79 times, 49 times under Republican Presidents and 29 times under Democratic Presidents. In recent times, it has become a political weapon due to our polarized political system. The only substantial legislation that Trump managed to pass in 4 years was an unfunded tax cut. Is he a RINO or non-RINO?
Both freaking sides are to blame, that's as good of an agreement with you that you are getting from me. Okay... BOTH SIDE ARE TO BLAME... That is both the House and the Senate... and whichever POTUS is there. Now take the win and be happy...
So why is it that when Trump was president it was ok to raise the debt limit multiple times without spending cuts but when Biden is president there must be massive spending cuts to raise the debt limit?
I'm so old I remember when the Republican Party was the party of fiscal responsibility. Since Reagan it's been the party of borrow and spend. The last remotely fiscally responsible Republican president was George H.W. Bush and his position that included a very small tax increase brought him a primary challenge from a member of his own party followed by a defeat in the 1992 general election.
The debt ceiling is to pay for bills the republicans already voted for. If they want to impact next years budget they should actually have a plan that America wants and put it forward. These disingenuous hucksters are transparent as jellyfish. 2019 Trump signs budget deal and suspends debt ceiling until 2021 2018 Trump Signs Budget Deal to Raise Spending and Reopen Government (Published 2018) 2017 Trump Bypasses Republicans to Strike Deal on Debt Limit and Harvey Aid (Published 2017)
They may yet, but remember, almost since it's passage, we have decided the 14th Amendment doesn't mean what it says it means
Looks like a Declaratory Judgment action has been filed by a Government Employees Union asserting the 14th Amendment Guessing there might be a justiciability/separation of powers ultimate argument
