We seem to be a destination for Big10 QBs. Might as well add another one.

Staff took off the weekend after O&B game and also off this week for draft. Staff that is recruiting year round taking a lot of time off while other programs get commits.

I’m not a paying member of another gator site but I did see a canes sight (Bobby I think you post there) copy and paste part of a story from a reporter on the competing gator site stating that UF is asking potential transfer targets to put together a tape/film/clips for the staff to evaluate before offering or further speaking to potential transfers. In at least one verified case , this includes multi year power 5 starter who would be an immediate starter at a position of need who is coveted by most major programs. Player told reporter why should be need to put together a film of his play over 20+ starts - either you watched my game film and know I can play or you don’t think I’m worth it. No other school is asking him to put together a highlight tape to evaluate. He decided to no longer consider UF as a transfer destination.

if this is going on with proven players in the portal (similar to how we Napier asked this from Mullens recruits committed back when Napier got the job)….then the staff seems to be sabatoging our chances at the best if not every player in the portal. I don’t get it.

I don't think it matters ... the portal has closed.
Or is there another window or work-around that I am unaware of?

yeah, I thought that too but I’m not sure. I think the post is about two different players. One part is clearly about Simmons. However, Simmons has only started 13 games (he is a redshirt freshman). The article says this player is a multi year starter with 20 starts so that has to be someone else, no? Simmons doesn’t fit that description.

Pump the brakes. He can't give a highlight reel of 20+ games because he has only played one season against the 260 lbs. linemen of San Jose St., Nevada, Fresno St., Utah St., etc. His being a huge pick up in the portal is projection because of being a highly rated guy out of high school for a place like SDSU. He may end up great in the B1G and may be could have been great in the SEC, but I am sure we were not handing him a starting spot here. He was not a multi year power 5 starter who would be an immediate starter at a position of need who is coveted by most major programs. I'm sure we would have wanted to see what kind of buy-in he had or if he expected to start one year and leave for the NFL regardless of how. We have seen the Mullen commits who refused to give a highlight tape to Napier flounder in their first stop.

Simmons only started 13 games and was not transferring from a power 5 school so the post must also be about someone other than/ in addition to Simmons.

plus, why would any player already playing college football - not someone who is on a team but never played yet - need to put together their own tape? UF has 100 football staffers, some of whom I assumes job it is (like Bird Sherrel) to evaluate players and advise the coaches if we should pursue. Any player transferring who has played tons of games has tons of game film that can be reviewed. You think Jordan Addison or Bear Alexander or the Sun Belt defensive player of the year at App state who his in the portal is gonna spend his weekend creating a tape for UF coaches to review? That is ridiculous. Instead, they will speak to schools who will do their own work on reviewing their game tape and inviting them in. Seems lazy on UF part to ask the transfers to do it for them. It’s like UF is saying “hey, I know you started for 2 years and were all conference but we need to see how much you are interested in UF and we can’t be troubled to do our own work so put together a highlight tape and while you are at it, write an essay about why you want to be a gator”. Lol

Or the players are immediately exposed as not capable of buying in and we avoid major red flags? How is this sabotaging their chances lmao

what quality player needs to prove to UF how good they are? To my knowledge, Napier asked for the film from the high school recruits in Mullen last class because 1) he didn’t recruit them initially and 2) he didn’t have but like 5 assistant coaches hired and getting the tape from the players would be helpful and also show some buy in to Uf and 3) the high school season was over so couldn’t watch them play live.

Napier did not ask 2023 recruits and is not asking 2024 recruits to submit their own tapes. You think Derek Lagway had to put together a video for the UF staff of his highlights? No. Napier now has dozens of analysts to pluck film. They could watch videos on recruiting servicing sites. They could fly and watch the kids play in person. Attend all star games and 7 on 7 skill events.

Do you think any 4 and 5 star high school athlete is putting a tape together for any school? Not a chance. And if you think that elite players will put together a tape for the only school asking for one out of 130 division 1 teams and somehow think it makes sense and that makes them consider Uf more strongly thats laughable. UF has no more to offer than Bama or Georgia or Ohio State or Texas, etc. putting up barriers for a recruit just to “gauge his buy in”? I get it for a player they havent had time to see or contacts them out of the blue and tries to sell themself to Uf.

Same goes for transfers (that actually have playing time while at their current school). These players are not reaching out to UF and Oklahoma and Michigan , etc. Schools are contacting the players to gauge their interest. Should the player ask Uf…”hey, can you put together a tape of your offensive system and how you use my position and send that to me? Include a plan on where you may be going as a program since you were 6-7 last year. I need you to do this to gauge your interest and buy in in me”. That would be preposterous but no different that what UF is potentially doing to players.

Part of the reason the superstar transfers are committing to other programs while we get to evaluating a tape and grading essays. UF has 100 football staffers to pull tapes, watch games, do criminal background checks, lob phone calls to high school coaches, etc. being the only program to ask them to send evaluation tape is cutting edge not helping us sign transfers. I guess the other 129 programs, many of them more successful than UF these days, are all stupid and stuck in the mud. Only the Uf staff is doing it right?

Florida offered CB Trey Amos in the portal from Napiers prior school Louisiana. Looks like tons of major programs (Bama, lsu, etc) did as well.
