Lack of a qualified starter is not a good reason for forcing a kid to play before he is ready. A qb being ready has to do with tge coaching he has had growing up. I’d think professional coaching isn’t available to most kids. Lagway looks pretty polished I guess but I have no idea if he will be ready for sec play. It’s doubtful.

What is the alternative? Letting a five star player who might have to take lumps if he plays sit on the bench behind less talented QBs? I am sure that will do a lot for his psyche!

I guess there’s a reason that it’s very rare that professional coaches don’t start to freshman. He may start and do well and it may be great for him to get the experience. We will see.

Well I think that’s the big question. What’s more damaging to a kid’s psyche — getting thrown to the wolves right out of high school at 19 years old and likely getting your ass kicked by SEC defenses — or spending a redshirt year getting your SEC feet under you with time to get part way up the learning curve before taking the field?

Unless the kid is something really special, I think option 2 has the lowest risk

So I watched the video. Am I the only one that still doesn't understand what the unexpected turn is?

Damaged psyche is overrated. If your psyche is destroyed by some bad games, this ain’t for you. If you have a bad game, bad month, bad season, learn from it and get better. You need to develop mental toughness as much as you need to develop football skills.

In a perfect scenario a player like Lagway could come in a see some action every, or at least almost every, game his first year while playing behind an experienced and capable QB. Much like Tebow playing behind Chris Leak. Unfortunately, that scenario doesn’t always present itself. I’m hoping Miller will evolve into a Chris Leak caliber QB or someone emerges where Lagway doesn’t have to be “The Guy” his first year. But from what I’ve seen/heard of Lagway he has a ton of ability AND character. Would hate to see a situation where he is expected to be QB in waiting for 2 or 3 years.

I think both are valid and it’s kinda a crap shoot. I’m mostly for at least getting his feet wet like Tebow did his freshman year. Limited package. Tebow may or may not have won the heisman his sophomore year if he redshirted. We will never know. Maybe we still win tge ship in 06 had Leak gotten hurt early and Timmy had to play.

Exactly.Leak was pretty dang good though. I doubt we see anything close to him until Lagway is ready to go.

Tebow's situation was very different. Similar to Cam Newton at Florida as well. Both had viable championship-level QBs ahead of them on the roster. If we had a bum in front of Tebow his freshman year, I think the correct thing would have been to start Tebow. He looked ready from phase 1, day 1.

Not sure, but that’s not really the point, is it? I’m not saying we should have started him over Leak. I’m saying if Leak wasn’t there we should have had no issue starting him unless there was a better QB on the roster.

So you’d propose playing a worse player? That’s not good for the team

Only time that happens is if it’s a close call, and you defer to seniority

But we can prognosticate a bit

Most likely we are staring at a mediocre year (5-7 wins)

Whether we agree with it or not there will be noise in the system in 2024. A bad year CBN might not even get a 4th, especially one with minimal hope or improvement.

CBN will be incentivized to get Lagway in early to maximize the year, and maximize his chances to stay and have a great 2025. Even if there is risk Lagway gets harmed…..no point to prep for 2026 if 2025 isn’t even guaranteed.

This is the theme of every damn thing you post -- it's obvious what you're trying to do here. Whoever your team is, we'll know when you disappear after the Gators kick their ass

I tend to agree with @Skink. I've given a lot of latitude but every post you make is doom-and-gloom for Florida . . . a constant drumbeat of negativity regardless of the topic . . . best we can hope for is a mediocre year . . . Coach Napier will be on the hot seat in 2024, may not even get 2025, etc. Now the heartless dead-man-walking will throw Lagway to the lions in 2024 -- even risking Lagway getting harmed -- to save himself? I would strongly encourage you to read Rule O @Matthanuf06.

Perhaps or perhaps how he was brought along is why he won the heisman in his second year. You never know, that’s why all the armchair qbs get to debate it.
