Everyone knows the root cause and it's not the game - or any game for that matter. There is simply no willingness to address the problem that evolved with greed. Sports are more of a broadcast event than spectator event now. There is no fix dickering with the rules. Nevertheless, commercials could be run PIP while the game proceeds naturally. In the event something happens there's instant replay to fill in the snore time between plays. Plus, the spectators would actually have a game that's watchable in person again.

I don't see how anyone can tolerate paying huge money to have a seat at a live game anymore. I'm not about to start watching full games again on TV, much less live, unless they become less like QVC and more like games that were not broadcast.

So to clarify this rule and the actual practice the last few years...

While, yes, the clock is supposed to stop after every first down, in recent years that clock stoppage has been about 1-3 seconds. (Same for a guy going OB.)
Not 10-15 as someone said earlier- closer to 1-3 seconds.
THAT IS TRUE FOR MUCH OF THE GAME- but not all of it.

During crunch time- end of half or game, then yes, they do stop the clock for 10-15 seconds.
It's almost like they were keeping that clock running when no one is watching.

This will shorten the games slightly, but if they REALLY wanted to shorten the games they would change the targeting rule.
It's so idiotic to have 3-5 minute stoppages every time a ref MIGHT see targeting.

If they eliminated 2 of those per game it would do more to shorten the games than this clock stoppage rule change. (And there's at least 2 per game.)

Actually most of the increase in the length of the game has been the plethora of reviews, the most egregious being the targeting rule. Virtually every TD gets reviewed whether its close or not. It just sucks the life out of the flow of the game. I think all these automatic reviews should stop. Give each coach one or two review requests per half and leave it at that. That should speed up the game and and keep some some of the usual crappy refereeing at bay.

You are exactly right, it’s all those hundreds of commercials that make the games go long. Not the game itself.

They don't run commercials after first downs anyway, it's change of possession or end of Q. And they "could" add another 30 seconds to the existing breaks

Commercials. What a sweet deal. Broadcast providers raise their rates and advertisers raise prices and blame it on anything else. We pay for that even of we don't watch or care two cents about the game or sport. I can't wait to hear that some AD has a bucket passed through the stands asking for 10% to bolster facilities or NIL.it's gonna happen :).

When I first saw the title of this thread and an article on SDS about rule changes to shorten the game I was hopeful. Then after reading the new rules I returned to reality.
The real need to make games shorter and more enjoyable is to reduce commercial times. 99.999% of us feel this way. That’s not addressed and probably never will be.
