Looks to be a cold case that CNN is reviving…. Basically, two men, 3 months apart, both minorities, were last seen getting into this police officer’s car… then never heard from again. It’s a long CNN article, but there is plenty of evidence that the cop lied about the encounters … and he declined to be interviewed by the FBI…

Very suspicious. No hard evidence, just.. weird. The way he was described by his peers were all over the place.

Also, this: When a CNN reporter mentioned how hard it was to persuade other deputies to talk about Calkins, the former employee said, “Blue don’t tell on blue.”

    It's SYSTEMIC.

Anecdotal... every policy department is now guilty... The use of these one off stories is geared to disparage and defame the entire policing institutions and all police departments in American. One case at a time.... piecemeal.

Lots of weird things in those canals and swamps. Spent my teen years in Charlotte County. (Research: General Development Corporation) Those unfinished neighborhoods were breeding grounds for weirdness.

Corruption starts and ends with administration. Police, fire, school board, politics etc.

There is a very small contingent of people that sign up to be cops for nefarious reasons but they are out there. The overwhelming majority of cops I have personally known just want to go to work, have an uneventful shift and go home. The problem is that most people of any demographic lack the confidence, knowledge or path to buck the system. People expect an average young person starting a new career to come in and make waves.

Transgressions are usually more subtle than a case of Police brutality. Good employees who try to correct a "lesser transgression " get squashed so they fall in line and keep their heads down. This obviously isn't the only issue but it is a big one.

I have been somewhat of a whistle blower at the fire department over the years. I have been threatened with termination for exposing a diesel exhaust issue in one of our stations and mold in another. I called their bluff because I knew how to navigate the trail of documentation needed to first prove a pattern of ignoring the problem and secondly to protect myself from any retribution. My career path has suffered for it but I can rest my head at night knowing I did the right thing. I started much older than most and also had an upbringing that taught me a value system of integrity beyond all else.

Start holding administration's accountable first and foremost. That doesn't excuse line personnel but administration sets the tone for any agency or department.

Well, the “other” problem with bad cops is that they have near total authority, are armed to the teeth, and have essentially impenetrable protection after the fact.

Maybe that school board member is out to get you. So? It’s one doofus from down the street with no power or protection beyond what any other doofus can muster up. You may very well end up dominating that fight. What’s the worst result? Dr. Seuss is OUT!!

Worst result with bad cops: Emmitto just went and vanished one day!

Relax man. It's not an either or thing. Cops are armed to the teeth because our backwards gun culture. While I don't think the average person has a clue what cops deal with I also believe they are taught to fear and over treat most situations. When you're a hammer you see everything as a nail. I think we agree more than we don't with problems in policing.

I’m perfectly calm. I have a cop brother, veteran Marine. I have the perfect level of respect and empathy for him and his colleagues. And that level is less than the hero worship demanded by society at large.

It’s OK to point out how cops can and do kill people at a much higher rate than teachers and all other message board villians, and then have avenues out of the kills that no other citizen has.

I’m certain that there are a number of serial killers masquerading as cops at any given time. It’s a perfect cover and by nature they’re very difficult to find. Got one in CA a few years back.

The OP is about this particular case. I like how you jumped all over this thread’s intent but ignore the “black crime” threads intent that get on here all the time.

When they got to the point about the guy--the former deputy---living in Iowa...for a moment, i kinda felt for the guy. Imagine if he completely innocent, and just had this unwarranted cloud hanging over him...

Alas, 2 ppl missing, same cop, same car, same story, and in both cases, the 'alibi' fails (ie no corroboration at eithr circle K...)

....dude way completely unable to account for his whereabouts..and .

    And 2 missing vics.

And lest ye forget, his boss, the sheriff (a cop too) fired him because he couldn't be trusted.

There have been numerous modern instances of cops that were serial killers. Documented cases. I suggest you research before spouting off next time.

We wouldn’t call them “serial killers”, but old time sheriffs that did extra-judicial killings of blacks and otherwise mistreated slaves weren’t much better. In modern times the “serial killer” would more likely be a loan wolf type. Is there any extra propensity for a cop to be a “serial killer” that goes out and stalks victims? Maybe not. I don’t think that’s what comes to mind when we think of police brutality, we think of cops beating the shit out of someone after a chase or going in guns blazing when there was no reason. But it’s hardly outside the realm of possibility the person in the OP had something to do with these disappearances, certainly sounds fishy.

Spouting off? You must not be very self aware. Go have a Bud Light and relax.
