In their biggest meets this postseason, the Gators performed their best gymnastics: 198.425 in the SEC Championship-winning by .500-and 198.2375 in the finals. In the Regionals Semis and Finals and National Semis, thanks to Jenny's shuffling of the line-up to compensate the injury to the nation's best gymnast-and keeping the team focused after Trinity's mid-meet injury, the Gators got the job done. When you compare the scores of each routine between the Gators and Oklahoma, the Gators performed better on three out-of four routines. When you factor in the significance of Trinity's absence on Floor, it is massive: she is ranked #2 with a NQS score 9.975. This season, she scored 2x10.000 including a 10.000 in SEC Champs., 3x9.975, 3x9.950. But a healthy Trinity may not have changed the outcome anyway. Oklahoma was on fire and they seem to be immune to pressure. For the 2nd straight year in the final rotation, the Sooners were on Beam, and theGators were surging and putting pressure on them, but the Sooners' Beam team did not miss a beat. As if they have ice in their veins, Oklahoma performed almost flawlessly and not let Florida overtake them. Last year I was crushed after the meet. This year I'm a little melancholy, but it's more about never watching Trinity perform as a Gator again. I'm so impressed by how hard the Gators' fought and how close we came to winning the Natty when none of us here-including me- thought we'd have a chance to win after the injury to Trinity. Since 2016, the Gators had a reputation of underperforming at Nationals. They even had a name for it-the "Gator Curse" or something similar. But the last two finals' results have definitely changed that.
i only disagree to say missing trinity in the all-around was the difference between winning and losing. last year, ou was just better. -----utah finished 3rd again, won the pac 12, recruits well, and is right up there close to ou and uf. EDIT 4/18: Just want to clarify - While 1, 2, and 3 are pretty much set, 4-8 seem to rotate a lot. With that said Michigan won the national championship in 21, UCLA has won a national championship since UF last won, and Auburn finished 4th in 22 while LSU finished 4th in 23. These team just can't be counted out although AU is a team I consider to be like the next team I'm going to mention when without Suni Lee. Kentucky was a newcomer to the top 8 at nationals, but they still have a lot to prove. Arkansas and Missouri are much improved. California and Michigan State seem to be improving too. Oregon State just isn't there yet even with Jade Carey. I read about 6 months ago that Texas A&M was thinking of adding women's gymnastics. Can Texas be much further behind? Hope not on Texas and aTm as our Texas recruiting well may dry up. Oklahoma will find out that competing full SEC seasons will be quite a change from having to hunt up OOC teams to get their competition as they do now. Denver is the only other good team in the Big 12.
2023 College Gym News Awards Announced: 2023 College Gym News Awards Announced - College Gym News Gymnast of the Year: Trinity Thomas - Pretty sure Trinity would have won Most Valuable Gymnast of the Year if she could have taken two awards. Gators Gymnastics on Twitter: "2⃣0⃣2⃣3⃣ @collegegymnews_ Gymnast of Year is ! Second such honor of outstanding career. Congratulations Trin! https://t.co/NYHRPQCLgu #GoGators | ♀️ | @Gym_Trin https://t.co/gv3MxZtGB1" / Twitter I was surprised Kayla DiCello did not win Freshman of the Year although she was nominated. I'd have given Coaching Staff of the Year to KJ Kindler of Oklahoma. Everybody else, no exceptions, is looking up at KJ/OU. College Gym New's Rule: Only one award per gymnast.
Yeah, moving to the SEC is going to be much tougher for Oklahoma, I was not happy when all sports except wrestling are moving to the SEC but I guess money talks but it will give Oklahoma a new challenge though!
I'm not sure what to think about the new SEC Championship format once Oklahoma joins in 2025: top-seed (highest NQS ranking) has a bye and two quad meets (2,5,6,9) and (3,4,7,8). The two winners + the next highest scoring team from the two meets combined will play in the championship quad meet with the top seed. Is this too much to ask for our gymnasts who just went through a gruelling season? A tired and sore body is more susceptible to injury. The B1G 10 Championship has two sessions, the top 4 in one session and seeds 5-10 in another, just like how the SEC does now. Questions are: 1-how to determine the individual champions? 2- do the 3 finalists other than the top-seed with the bye receive an extra meet towards their NQS to drop a low score? I said this in a previous post but the new schedule will be 8 meets against SEC, leaving only 2-3 meets to compete outside the SEC. I think 1 week should be a tri-meet with 2 other SEC teams (3 tri-meets equals 9 SEC teams, so each SEC member would compete in one tri-meet). This would free up a weekend to compete outside of the conference). The B1G 10 has ten members in gymnastics so in order for all 10 teams to compete against each other, they have six dual meets and two 5-meets.
Still have Trinity Thomas and Bridget Sloan as 1A and 1B with Florida. Sloan delivering 3 national championships for the team in 4 years is just as good as 28 perfect scores over 5 years and no national championships for Thomas. Sloan was a drive the team hard leader, a trait I wish Jenny Rowland had more of.
Dr. Sam, PhD (@DrSam_PhD) / Twitter Projected 24 depth chart for each of the 4 events can be found on Dr. Sam site.
Fantastic follow on twitter and instagram if you're a Gator gymnastics fan. She graduated from UF and has relationships with many of the staff and gymnasts. She knows a lot about college gymnastics.
Good luck Savannah. The tipoff was Savannah not showing up on any of the projected routines on Dr. Sam's website for 2024. We still don't know what Leanne Wong and Kayla DeCello are going to do about working elites for Paris 24, but Savannah is now settled as a 6th year graduate transfer.
College Gym News tracking transfers and those in the transfer portal: Tracking 2023-24 Transfers - College Gym News Anybody UF might won't off of that list? I really don't recognize any of the names. EDIT: The only two on the list I could see helping UF are Lauren Rutherford of NC State and Sidney Washington of Pitt. Both can perform on 3 events, Vault, Bars, & Floor, scoring between 9.80 and 9.875. They are not high performers, but they are good performers. Me? Presuming UF is interested in plucking gymnasts from the transfer portal, I'd hold off and wait to see whom else might decide to transfer.
