Sherlock, or Shoylock as you so ineptly referred to him, is indeed a play on Holmes famous character, And for those who failed to recognize the character of Shylock, that reference is to a disagreeable Jewish moneylender in Shakespeare's play 'The Merchant of Venice.' Required reading in Florida's schools in the 9th grade.

Without looking it up do you recognize, or could you correctly place this phrase? "But first, let us kill all the lawyers."

There appears to be no penetrating the hive mind. So I’m economizing my approach, hoping to pick off a straggler. Gotta start somewhere.

You know what makes this place a "sewer"? It's comments like "unhinged" and "loony." It's all the ugly words so freely tossed about solely intended to irritate the ones targeted. It's not a "reminder of how shitty the real world might be." It's a clear indicator of what is happening in the world right now.

The gloves are removed on this forum as insults fly and destructive words of hate are exchanged like hand grenades from both sides. What good is it doing? None, zero, nada. All it does is hinder civil and constructive conversation. Is that what all you hate mongers on both sides want?

    Why?

One of Shakespeare's Henry plays (not sure which). The meaning was akin to the commies' belief that to effectively govern a people, best to take away their access to knowledge and correct information (lawyers in the context of the play, Church in the context of communism). That's why communism shuts down churches--in order to displace God with government.

Don't know much about the play, just a few second characterizations about the context.

But by all means, do go on and enlighten us--another 2nd hand characterization is always well taken and appreciated--bc the alternative would be to actually read the play, and I have way too much in the queue.

    Reciprocity, mostly.

I've never been very good at the 'turn the other cheek' business.

As you like it .., And as I am not into writing out a lengthy explanation I will link this analysis from a literary site. You can read the entire article in less than 10 minutes, counselor.
What did Shakespeare mean when he wrote “let’s kill all the lawyers?” ‹ Literary Hub

"Well, first of all, the quote is real! It goes, “The first thing we do is, let’s kill all the lawyers.” It’s said by a character called Dick the Butcher in Act IV, Scene II of William Shakespeare’s Henry VI, Part II, which was (we think) written between 1596 and 1599.

"Approximately four hundred years after Shakespeare’s death, this pithy phrase has become one of his most famous witticisms, appropriated often to disparage the legal profession, or at least acknowledge the ubiquitous caricature of the crooked, overpriced, counselor."
    _________________________________________

As always, context is key. Here is the dialogue from Henry VI, Act 4 scene 2, Shakespeare's 400 year old play.

    JACK CADE. Valiant I am.

SMITH [aside]. A must needs; for beggary is valiant.

JACK CADE. I am able to endure much.

DICK [aside]. No question of that; for I have seen him whipp’d three market-days together.

JACK CADE. I fear neither sword nor fire.

SMITH [aside]. He need not fear the sword; for his coat is of proof.

DICK [aside]. But methinks he should stand in fear of fire, being burnt i’ th’hand for stealing of sheep.

JACK CADE. Be brave, then; for your captain is brave, and vows reformation. There shall be in England seven half-penny loaves sold for a penny: the three-hoop’d pot shall have ten hoops; and I will make it felony to drink small beer: all the realm shall be in common; and in Cheapside shall my palfrey go to grass: and when I am king,- as king I will be,-

    ALL. God save your majesty!

JACK CADE. I thank you, good people:- there shall be no money; all shall eat and drink on my score; and I will apparel them all in one livery, that they may agree like brothers, and worship me their lord.

DICK. The first thing we do, let’s kill all the lawyers.
    __________________________________________

"Dick is a villainous character—he is a large, threatening murderer, and he is also the right-hand-man of Jack Cade, who is leading a rebellion against King Henry. Cade and Dick are aggressively anti-intellectual; they kill anyone who can read and burn all the books and documents they encounter. They know that they’ll be able to take over an ignorant population with greater ease than one where everyone understands their rights.

"One reading of this strange quote suggests, therefore, that society could not exist in a state of fairness and peace without the protectiveness of both the law and its staunch guardians. Dick is suggesting that, in order for their coup to prevail, they must eradicate society of the very defenders of justice who could both stop the revolt he intends to help spur and then remove the power he hopes to grab for Cade."

Or perhaps our human view of what is important in a grander scheme is skewed.

A loving God could choose to save some and take others for reasons we cant understand, much like everything else in this universe

But your disdain for people that believe in something bigger than you is landing.
