In addition to the gun issue, there is also the issue that our society constantly tells us that we should be in the state of fear around a young black male. That widespread societal perception creates fatal danger for children like this one, innocently knocking on a door
The only person this is bad news for is the guy that shot him. The kid living is probably the only way he gets charged with something as he can refute his SYG claim.
Good point. According to the articles I saw, officials have said they don't believe it was "racially motivated," but it's still being investigated. At the very least, it's fair to ask whether the shooter would have been as terrified by a 16 year old White kid at his door. Of course, even suggesting that we need to discuss such biases is considered "woke" or CRT or something.
Which is why I didn’t make any mention of race in the thread title, it would immediately make some bristle in the name of anti-wokeness

I wonder if this guy made some racist comments to the cops, or something, because their are two sources — the police chief, and the prosecutor — saying race was a factor….
Didn’t have to be an overtly racist comment, the old guy literally could have said “I was scared because a black kid was on my porch”.
True… that’s pretty much what he’s quoted as saying except for the “black” part, anyway. He said something like he was scared because the guy that rang the doorbell was large and he was too old to defend himself… he shoot him though the window, apparently … crazy….
What freedom looks like Witnesses told police Avila-Vega left the party at around one in the morning upset because his gun had been taken from him. He allegedly came back with a different gun and shot the father of six multiple times. The shooting occurred as the baby shower was winding down and most guests had left, according to family.
Not surprised. The guy is 84, at that age folks don't gaf about being politically correct. He's got "Yeah I shot him and I'd do it again" written all over his face.
And for most of US history, he would not even be charged. He may still escape true responsibility. It’s part of the changes that there is so much reactionary energy against, to make us great again, outlaw CRT, etc. To get back to that world, assuming we are even out of it, which is far from certain
