Yes, and I think we both know it's pretty unlikely he starts a guy who threw 62 midweek to start on 4 days rest midseason. Is it "possible"? Sure. But very unlikely
Good point. That's the thing about these stats. We aren't given the raw numbers to see how many occurrences go into them for statistical relevance and all this situational comparisons how were the pitchers they faced. About the only relevance we can decipher is non conference verses SEC.
Some random notes on Barrett: vs. FLORIDA: 2 APP, 9 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 4 K, 2 BB, 0 3B, .161 OBA, .470 O-OPS, 1.00 ERA, 0.78 WHIP, 120 pitches, 13.3 per inning vs. Others: 4 APP, 7 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 8 K, 2 BB, 0 3B, .154 OBA, .613 O-OPS, 6.43 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, 115 pitches, 16.4 per inning His longest outing not against FLORIDA is 3.1 IP against UCF and then before that 2 IP against JU in his first appearance of the year. SWAC is 1-5 in his appearances having lost 5 straight now (he has not had a decision in any of his appearances). Go GATORS! ,WESGATORS
Cap tip to Halter, he was on base more than anyone last night and as usual his defense is top notch. (#5 has fewest strike outs on team)
Great point. He has 6 Ks in 44 ABs in SEC play which leads the team in K/AB amongst the regular players (.136). Huge improvement over last season's .277 SEC number. His SEC OPS is also .837, another huge bump from last year's .579 number. Go GATORS! ,WESGATORS
I agree that Halter is playing very well right now and helping the team in a lot of ways. While he's made some great plays at the hot corner, his fielding for the season is .919, .893 in SEC games. That's the lowest of any of our regular players by quite a bit.
he has 1 more error than the other infielders is all...not quite a bit. True its on less chances but Balls come at him a tad faster. I think Chris Armstrong had that many in one game against UF
He’s our best option defensively at Third Base. Putting that aside, one could make a strong case for having him lead off.
With Robertsons propensity of getting on base I think you stick with that. But moving him in the 5 hole seems like an option …but what do I know. Sully will figure it out.
What you say is true as far as it goes - that Colby's 5 errors came in only 62 chances. Kurland has 4 errors in 80 chances. Rivera has 4 errors in 119 chances. Caglionone has 4 errors in 134 chances. Riopelle has 3 errors in 364 chances. Their respective fielding percentages are: Riopelle .992; Cags .970; Rivera .966; Kurland .950; Halter .919. That's a fielding percentage that is "quite a bit" lower than the other everyday infielders. I stand by my original statement. Remember, Halter has started only 26 of their 34 games, while playing in 30. Kurland has started 31 of their games, played in 32. Riopelle started in 33 games, played in all 34. Cags & Rivera have started all 34 games. Who knows whether Halter's fielding percentage would be better or worse if he had started all the games and gotten more chances. But the fact remains that his fielding percentage is quite a bit lower than our other main infielders and it's even worse in SEC games. I love the kid and believe he is and has been our best option at 3rd base. But when we present information about any of our players and want to heap praise on them (which I enjoy doing as well as the next fan), we have to be willing to acknowledge the areas where there is room for improvement and not just try to rationalize why the facts don't say what we want them to say.
look my post was Positive about how well Halter has been hitting and playing good defense, You wanna drag up he has a lowest % fielding. I know what my eyes see. I also dont hold my breath when Halter throws to first but tend to cringe when Kurland does.
In baseball, short and 3rd have the lowest fielding percentage. Catcher, first and outfield the highest with 2nd following. So comparing Halter to Cags, Kurland and BT is not really relevant IMO. I have NOT seen his 5 errors but the bad one was the attempted throw to 2nd. I have read about the incredible plays he has made robbing potential hits so there is something to be said about that. If he has robbed 4 or 5 hits that another 3rd baseman would not have made then those 5 errors do not look so bad. Again……I am just going by what I have read on the game threads.
I thought it was closer than that. I think we're just a game or so short of Miami. Amazing work by Sully.
You were already assuming we were going to win the next one. Common reality that happens quite often these days.
Colby Halter is a baller—I can say this @gatorstevelp — I would have him in my lineup barring injury, every time the ground’s crew laid the game foul lines down on the field….. And IMHO, whenever he is done with his playing days he’s going to make one helluva coach.
I'm not "dragging" up anything. I, too agreed with your positive post and made several positive comments about Halter as well. But I believe in positing honest opinions backed by FACTS. I simply pointed out the truth and you then distorted what I said by going to the number of errors he's committed versus the fielding percentage that I posted. And I totally agree with what 74Nole said a couple of posts above. Love the kid. But the facts don't change.
I will say....comparing his fielding % to a 1B and a C is not a proper evaluation. You are right, his number isn't where it needs to be, but IMO that will level out as his chances build up. His numbers in comparison to other positions isn't particularly relevant.... catching a strike 3 behind the plate or a nice toss to 1B skews the numbers for those posiions. Fielding % in general is sometimes a difficult propostion. A SS who has the range of Ozzie Smith may get to balls no one else can get to, but sometimes that spectacular range can lead to an even more difficult throw that may get away from a lesser 1B. So a SS makes an unbelievable play with his legs and glove and it may only end up in the box as an error. When R Martin was at UF I didn't even bother to look at his fielding numbers, I knew he had an elite glove and elite range...sometimes he recorded an impossible out, here and there that might get him into trouble. Nature of the beast
