In my opinion, it would win more people over on the need for restrictions.

This is true, and it's not an accident. That's the way some of these guns and products have been marketed: to appeal to peoples' (particularly mens') desire for control, power, and the option to be a one-man fighting force or the leader of a fighting force. Below are just a few examples. When people express concern about these weapons, people will laugh and say they're just rifles. They will note that you can kill someone with a baseball bat. But that's certainly not reflective of the way these guns are being promoted. If these military-style weapons are not functionally different, then it seems fair to wonder about the impact of the marketing efforts, particularly on young men.

This won't stay in the news long
Connor Sturgeon has been identified as the suspect in a mass shooting at Old National Bank in Louisville, Kentucky.

Connor Sturgeon was the gunman who killed five people and wounded at least eight others in a shooting at the Old National Bank in Louisville, Kentucky on April 10, 2023, Louisville police said at a press conference. Police said the 23-year-old Sturgeon was a bank employee. He is also dead, according to police.

Sturgeon was live-streaming video on Instagram at the time of the shooting, police said at a press conference. The video and the account belonging to Sturgeon were taken down by Instagram. It was not immediately clear how long the live video was being streamed on Instagram and whether any clips were posted elsewhere online. Police and Old National Bank have not confirmed Sturgeon’s employment status at the time of the shooting.

The victims killed in the shooting have been identified as Joshua Barrick, 40; Thomas Elliott, 63; Juliana Farmer, 45; and James Tutt, 64. Louisville Metro Police Officer Nickolas Wilt was wounded and is in critical condition, police said. The four victims all worked at Old National Bank along with the shooter, according to their LinkedIn profiles. The wounded victims other than the officers also worked at the bank, police said. Several hours after their news conference, Louisville police confirmed that a fifth victim had died – Deana Eckert, 57.

I think what many are doing though IS adressing the issue. Part of the gun problem is the mental health of those that possess them. This is a message board. A discussion forum.

If this was the floor of Congress i would agree that we need some immediate action that is gun specific to at least start stemming the tide, but in a forum like this I think its healthy to discuss this holistically.

    (Does that make sense?)

They rarely do. Gotta break double digit deaths or target school children to have any staying power in the media these days. And even then it’s just a few more days. Totally desensitized to this as a society.

ok this is a different argument entirely. We were saying gun control doesn’t work. Now you are saying we can’t have gun control because of the second amendment (which isn’t entirely true either). That argument gets into differing interpretations of constitutional interpretation and history and not a rabbit hole I wish to go down.

I’m not going to completely dismiss the whole cultural aspect. But the problem with looking at US cities or even states is that often you have another city or state in close proximity with lax gun laws which mostly makes local gun laws ineffective. In other first world countries have have the entire country and even whole region who have stricter gun laws.

California has among the stricter gun laws, and they have among the lowest gun violence rates.

Ok not shockingly we are pining for the idealized notion of the 1950s leave it to beaver America. Again another rabbit hole. The 1950s were great….for white males. Not so much everyone else. Women stay at home and don’t work. We moved away from the 1950s not because liberals tore it down, because society chose to go that direction and wanted more freedoms. So you want government to give us more freedoms, but you want society to exert even greater social restrictions. Presumably religion plays a bigger part in your nirvana also.

If you look at Europe or other first world countries, they are usually less religious and don’t look like 1950s America. They are diverse. The key difference is gun laws.

Even if we were to agree with your view, how is that action oriented? How are you proposing to get back to 1950’s culture and values in order to reduce gun violence?

So you literally need to be shown this position person by person to believe it exists more broadly? That seems like a bit much. It is a not uncommon position in the US, and I suspect that you are attempting to do little more than launder that position to something more palatable by claiming it is not held at all and by now claiming that it is only held by one person.

Ultimately, I also suspect that there would never be studies that would lead to a call for action on guns themselves. There isn't a common psychological cause for these shooters. They simply have anger and resentments towards the world and easy enough access to guns that they can do something about it relatively easily. Those angers and resentments are highly individualized.

I dont know. Seems pie in the sky to me. Each shooter had a different reason, or an unknown reason, or no reason at all to do what they did. We dont stop speeders by trying to figure out what makes them speed... we establish rules and monitor them. Catch them while speeding. All of that is to reduce deaths. Not every speeder will kill someone while speeding just like not every gun owner will either. But put a bunch a rules out there to keep them as safe as possible. However, cant stop it, which is why I am with Ted Cruz with doubling policing in schools and making it a harder target as well.

ha ha on agreeing with dumbass Cruz on something.

But will get more play time from far-right news sources than most mass shootings.

I heard more about the Nashville shooting from my MAGA friends than any other mass shooting I can remember.

Please allow me to say that any mass shooting is terrible and I'm not glorifying them for political reasons

I only hear this from conservatives that Democrats want to only restrict/ban only the AR15. We use words like "gun control" and "assault weapons ban". This whole "only the AR15" narrative is made up in order to manufacture a false futility argument. The reason you hear AR15 so much in the news is because it seems that every mass shooting involves one, lately.

The identity and politics of the shooter has never been a reason why the stories don't last in the media cycle. The reason why they don't last as long anymore is that they have become so frequent that before we fully process one, another one happens. Also, it's only one side (Democrats/liberals) that keeps these stories in the news at all.

We were literally talking about its existence on this thread...at least I was.

Your comment lead me to this...

Op-Ed: We have studied every mass shooting since 1966. Here's what we've learned about the shooters

Now what if we could cross-reference that information with accessible medical records and look for additional commonalities. What if the HR records could help us learn of a better way to handle tough cases in employment with mental health considerations in mind. What if the HR records shared could help HR managers look for red flags? Same for student records and any other family records that are not otherwise covered. We're not done learning on these issues. There's a lot more out there.

Here is the thing I wish the right would get on this issue. Most of us probably have a bank person that we lean on.

We do. She handles all our loans. Our equity lines etc. When we sit in her office she has frames on the table in the corner. Pics of her husband and kids are in those frames. Several people in those frames at the Louisville bank just had their world catastrophically destroyed. Forever.

Now look across your own desk, at your own pictures. 100's of families will see those faces tragically stolen from them in their freaking schools. Their lives will be catastrophically destroyed. Forever.

Now take a minute and think about the sad fact that there are people in this country that think that tragic destruction is worthy collateral damage for owning certain UNNECESSARY guns. Some even thinking those guns should have no limitations.

We need mental health check. Background checks, AND we also need some of these guns banned from the marketplace.

We suck if we cant at least admit that is wrong. Call me a RINO. If thats what it means than I'll wear it proudly.

thank you for being a responsible gun owner who secures their guns. I would say that you are in the minority of people who do so. I know multiple people who will say they are too expensive but they go out and spend more than the cost of the safe for another firearm.

do you think we could get these modest first steps above implemented into law?

you are correct that no law is going to fix the problem overnight but we have to start the process somewhere and it should have started after Sandy Hook and we would be that much further ahead now

These mass shootings typically don't stay in the news long because of other news and even new mass shootings take their place in the headlines. Not sure what you were specifically getting at here, but I think mass shootings perpetrated by disgruntled employees don't make as good partisan fodder. They also don't instill the same public fear as shootings where the killer has targeted random people based upon a religious, political, racial, or terrorist motives.
