So 19 hours after being found guilty the Governor says “ima gonna pardon him”? Wow. I didn’t follow the case closely but, wow. I think it’s safe to say the legal system is 100% politicized now. Let’s just fire lawyers and judges and just vote on it. U.S. Army sergeant found guilty of murder in 2020 shooting of Austin protester Garrett Foster Foster, who was a 28-year-old white man and an Air Force veteran, had been seen openly carrying an AK-47 rifle at the time, which is legal. There are conflicting accounts as to whether Foster raised the rifle to the driver first — but seconds later Perry, who was also legally armed, shot and killed Foster and fled the area, police said. He called the police and reported what happened, claiming he shot in self defense after Foster aimed his weapon at him. Perry is also a white man. The case sparked debates over Texas’ “stand your ground” law, which allows people to use deadly force against someone else if they feel they are in danger. But Perry’s social media posts about retaliating against protesters raised questions about the shooter’s state of mind and his self-defense claim. The “stand your ground” law prohibits an individual from arguing self-defense if they provoked a threat from someone else. Witnesses said that Perry seemed to drive threateningly into the crowd before shots were fired, and his actions seemed intentional.
I heard about this too, but I too did not follow this case. Two guys with guns and different views. One guy gets shot and killed the other one lives. Any type of protesting with a firearm or weapon should be illegal.
It hinges on raising and pointing the weapon. If someone points a weapon at you, you do not have to wait for them to fire in order to defend yourself. I have not read any witness testimony nor seen any video evidence to indicate what actually happened but Uber driver said guy pointed the AK at him so he fired striking the guy with the AK with fatal shots
Seems inappropriate to rush to pardon a verdict, especially when it appears partisan. I doubt he does it if it were the other way around Having said that, I have no sympathy for any asshat, conservative or liberal, walking around in public with an ak-47. You are inviting trouble, and that’s what he got.
Texas is weird (lived there for 6+ years)....they seem backwards ass in some ways, yet they have no prob - that I know of - with Abbot identifying as a man.
go back and read my post.. I said I have not seen any evidence one way or other. Just repeating what Uber driver said.
The guy was found guilty by a jury that heard the testimony. The governor, without having watched the trial, said that the verdict was wrong, and he is going to pardon the defendant. There are some sick people in positions of power nowadays.
Another idiot with an AR-15 is dead. One fewer future mass murderer in society. I'd probably pardon the guy who shot him too.
This is a red meat case for conservatives, probably would have had the same outcome 10, 20, 30 years ago if stand your ground was around.
There were witnesses who disputed his account and video. The jury heard all of the evidence (including his social media rants about wanting to kill protesters) and voted to convict him of murder. Typical of Abbott. He's a repugnant person. Genuine scumbag.
Part of the long play, which didn’t even include Trump, was capturing the judicial branch. Trump obviously played his part, but he was just following orders. He has no idea how it all works. Another example of D’s being perpetually outsmarted.
I have no idea what happened. Wasn’t there and didn’t see any evidence. Nor hear any testimony. Never said it was ok. Was just trying to summarize the gist for people that didn’t follow the case.
Pretty plain what message Abbott wanted to convey. Same as DeSantis. Killing Black Lives Matter protesters because the message infuriates you should be legal. Redemption redux
CRT oversimplified. Racism is systemic to the point that power structures preserve white supremacy, often through facially neutral policies. Reactionary response. Not true, which we will prove by prioritizing state legislatures to pass laws micromanaging curricula to outlaw any consideration of the concept. Hmmmmm BLM oversimplified. We must emphasize the fact that our response to so many issues seems to presume that black life is worth less or is insignificant as a public policy concern, leading to deaths that we would view differently in any other context. Someone outraged by that message says he feels like killing protesters, kills a BLM protester, and is convicted after a trial. The Governor. We must pardon the convicted murderer before an application is even filed or considered. Hmmmmm
You may be missing this: a jury heard the evidence and issued a verdict. They determined "what actually happened". If defense counsel believes the jury erred, there are procedures for setting aside the verdict. For Abbott to make that statement rather than letting the system play out was rank pandering.
