Corruption in the SCOTUS

As one who was in the legal system for 45 years, it is inconceivable to me that Thomas and his wife would do this. Even if it's not improper - though I think it is - it glaringly appears so. Any judge who has integrity and respect for the legal system would resign. I don't think Thomas has either.

BTW, I find it interesting and revealing that none of our friends here on the right have weighed in. That suggests to me they are also put off by this.

 

It is interesting that Hunter Biden potentially trading on his name or getting do nothing jobs is a massive story and potentially corrupting to the President who is not directly implicated, but not a supreme court justice getting gifts from a rich benefactor, one who had a hand in essentially legalizing corruption.

 

Well, by his explanation, that he didn't know he had to report the gifts, apparently he'd prefer people think he's a moron rather than dishonest.

 

They would seem to be gifts rather than compensation for services rendered, unless it could be proven that Crow was expecting something in return.

 

Drubbing is word not used often enough!

 

Giving credit where credit is due I'm paraphrasing Nicole Wallace, how do you think Republican politicians and the conservative media would react if the Supreme Court Justice was Elena Kagan instead of Clarence Thomas and the megadonor was George Soros rather than Harlan Crow? Just asking.

 

If Thomas didn’t think what he was doing was improprietous, why did he stop disclosing Crow’s gifts after the LA Times outed him in 2004?

In a 2020 documentary, Thomas himself claimed he came from "regular stock" and that he prefers the ambience of a Wal-Mart parking lot or public beach to that of a luxury resort.

Yeah, right.

 

Maybe he was miserable the entire time on the yacht and wishing he was in a Wal-Mart parking lot?

 

Guess who helped pay for that documentary.

 

Exactly as you would expect.

 

I believe these are procedural traps that Republicans naturally create to the demise of Democrats.

What I mean is that Republicans are baiting Democrats with things they think are important to Democrats (fair play) - but those things are only really important in a world where both sides are playing by the same rules.

Gingrich threw that rulebook out the window 30 years ago. It is now a scorched earth and take no prisoners political world to Republicans.

Again the question is why now? Clarence Thomas has been doing this for 20 years, so why is it now coming to light?

While corruption IS important, it is not with people who could care less about it - let's say that is the Republican base - 30-35% who could care less because they crave power at all costs due to their, for instance, FEAR of largely being white high school graduates or corporate welfare queens without the ability to compete in a world which operates fairly (what you know instead of who you know), education matters, and paying your fair share taxes are part of being a citizen etc. etc.

The reason Republicans are trying to overthrow the government is because it is inevitable that they will lose power for a long time in the near future due to demographics and they will have to abandon their cynical power ploys such as the Southern Strategy to stay relevent. They believe this will lead to their economic (and thus power) demise. Their fear of the consequences overrides their care about the institutions, the rule of law, or anything except holding power.

This is why you saw a ham-fisted, but real, attempt to overthrow the government on Jan. 6, 2020. It is also why you see the TN House expelling black representatives who have challenged their power. When you can't win elections fairly because your platform stinks, even with extreme gerrymandering, the rational thought would be to change it so you can win elections to control the institutions of power. Unfortunately, Republicans since Gingrich do not care about the institution - they WANT to burn it to the ground, because then government will not work for anyone - if not them. They cynically think they can seize total power given the failure of the government and take us to their version of the Handmaiden's Tale.

Considering that, until they can do that they still have to win elections. Their strategy is to bait Democrats into what looks like a raw partisan power plays because they will gain support among cynical independents who lean to their way of thinking and it may be enough to keep them in play using the same playbook.

Indicting Trump for paying off a porn star is such a play. This didn't stop folks from voting for him in 2016 and the facts were all there. Bragg, however honest, is a Democrat and therefore, the rule of law means nothing.

Well so is going after a hyper partisan SC justice for corruption. Appearances mean something to the undecided, but the Republican base could care less.

So better to avoid the "procedural" traps of impeachment, which will fail, and win over the undecided by the wide OUTRAGE in response to these acts, because many elections are decided by EMOTIONS, not facts and evidence in what is considered cynical power plays by many that democrats can't win what they need to change things at the polls (and considering the degree of gerrymandering it is indeed a tall task).

Letting an injustice stand may help secure the next election so that we can ultimately work to stamp the injustice out forever.

 

Who cares as long as they publish actual facts.
