Anyone know our chances with this Providence transfer?
Seems like we could really use him even for one season.

Bynum has established himself as one of the nation’s best distributors, having averaged at least four assists per game and ranked among the top 100 players nationally in assist rate in each of his last two seasons. Statistically speaking, Bynum has also ranked among the top-five passers in the Big East in that stretch.

Well, he's visiting this weekend so that's a big positive IMO.

A quick look shows he had almost a 4-1 assist-to-turnover ratio this past season. Love that. Only 32% from 3, but was over 41% as a junior. Also shot 85% on free throws.
Also played in the Big East, against top talent. Lots to like.
Interesting that he's an old man for a college kid. 24 years old.

yeah… he has largely been a subpar shooter for the majority of his career. That, and 5’10 …. Meh.

My working assumption is that either Clayton or Thomas is our starter next year, so this take makes a lot of sense. If it’s Clayton, who can play some two and isn’t necessarily a distributor, then Bynum gives you a more traditional point guard off the bench who can create shots for himself and others and who takes care of the ball. If it’s Thomas, who will need plenty of mentoring, Bynum gives you someone to rotate with him who has a very similar game and a ton of experience. But I don’t see us taking him as a potential starter. He would be here for his experience and shot creation and as a depth/insurance piece.

Why would Bynum want to come here as a backup? He started for a team that was better than us.

You think they are still gonna be better than us next year? Or you think he starts over Clayton or Thomas?

It’s way too early to make a prediction about next season. Providence lost a great coach in Ed Cooley, but the guy they replaced him with looks solid. They also seem to be putting together a good roster for next season.

He wouldn’t start over either. To Tampa’s point… it would be an odd decision to transfer to a diminished role. I hope we are a bit more careful this off-season as it relates to managing expectations. There was some disharmony last year, and I think… in part… bc we over promised playing time and opportunity.

UConn took four transfers, and only one started. You aren’t going to fill your roster with portal starters. And the “disharmony” had primarily to do with one transfer who was never going to start until he got hot, then lost his spot when he went ice cold.

I didn’t mean to imply it was “starter or bust”, but I think he could very likely see a diminished role at Florida… depending upon who we land. The disharmony and overselling of playing time involved more than one player.

Sure. But only one transfer that I know of.

Ok. But if communications to/perceptions of incoming transfers … created issue for 1 transfer and 3 returnees, or 3 transfers and 1 returnee… I’m not sure matters.
I actually hope we dial back our roster this year, as I think we had a lot of redundant talent and expectations last season.
And I think it created some issues.

I might be having a brain cramp, but who is Thomas?

I don't know but Mizzou took 11 transfers and LSU (women) took 9 and it turned out well. Winning cures a lot of ills. Besides a number are going to transfer every year anyway. Get as many transfer as you can, throw it at the wall and see what sticks.

maybe it’s idealistic, but this is the part I hope we can avoid. I am not a fan of year-over-year roster overhaul.

It matters because we are actually discussing whether or not a transfer comes here expecting to get a starting spot.

as long as they get paid, I don't think it matters all that much who starts
