. . . and had only a few people left, after 20% drank themselves to death at the Purple Porpoise, and 70% were eaten by alligators.

I am thinking it could be for show, to rally the local sentiment against Ukraine. You have to remember Putin is playing to a home crowd in Crimea. Whip the people into a frenzy about a non-existent imminent invasion, just in case there is one. The added public sentiment will be used as a rationale to defend Crimea at all costs, if it ever comes to that. Which, based on Zelenskyy’s recent comments, is in question.

Blasts Hit Russia-Controlled City in Ukraine on Supply Route to Crimea (msn.com)

Ukraine stepped up strikes on a Russian-occupied city in southern Ukraine that sits along a critical supply line to Crimea and is a potential prime target for Ukraine’s planned spring offensive.

The exiled mayor of Melitopol, Ivan Fedorov, said a Russian base near an airfield was struck. Russian-installed occupation authorities in Melitopol said air defenses shot down six missiles fired by U.S.-supplied M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System or Himars. Western military analysts have said that Himars rockets probably can’t be intercepted by Russian systems.

The strikes were the third attack on the city in recent days. On Wednesday, there were explosions in the vicinity of a train depot and a military airstrip, Mr. Fedorov said. Two days earlier, Russian-installed official Maksym Zubarev was seriously wounded in an apparent car bomb attack in the city. Kyiv didn’t claim responsibility, but it has stated on several occasions that Ukrainian partisans are working in Russian-occupied areas.

Russian forces seized Melitopol in the early days of the invasion last year, creating a land bridge connecting areas under its control in mainland Ukraine with the Crimean Peninsula, which Russian forces occupied in 2014. The timing and target of Kyiv’s anticipated military push is closely guarded, but analysts say a thrust south to Melitopol makes strategic sense because it could break through Russia’s land bridge and restore Ukraine’s access to the Azov Sea.

Ukraine has started getting donated equipment from an unlikely source: the Russian army. Russian troops are arranging donations of military equipment on Ukraine's surrender hotline. About 3,000 troops a month are now surrendering to Ukraine (double what it was last year), and taking their military vehicles with them. The additional surrenders are believed to be because of fear of the spring offensive. The best effort to put a stop to this war might come from Russian soldiers.

Russians are offering up equipment and heavy armored vehicles to Ukraine's surrender hotline, official says

Nothing says that Russia is winning quite like doubling the surrender numbers. Maybe Russia is trying to put a burden on Ukraine to handle feeding and housing all of these soldiers. As soon as the world's breadbasket runs out of bread, Ukraine will have to surrender! Another great strategy by Putin! Will he ever stop being so brilliant?

    I give you THFSG ...

The system of secrecy and the Government’s own promotion of conspiracies, like the idea that Donald Trump was an agent of Vladimir Putin or a Russian stooge, which the U.S. intelligence agencies promoted. It’s not simply that they are wrong or pernicious, or that this reflects corruption. They actually drive people crazy. They deranged the political system. They ruin the ability for people to engage sanely and transparently in their own politics.

I don't think it is necessarily a fear of a sea war. If Russia gets booted out of the base at Sevastapol, they would probably have to move their ships out of the Black Sea, unless Russia has another base on the east bank of the Black Sea. Russian ships are being used not only for missile attacks against Ukraine, but also to prevent equipment and supplies from coming from the west directly by ship to Ukraine, rather than being driven across Poland.

The same was probably true of a former British colony in some place called "America" that fought for its independence and freedom. I wonder what happened to that former colony? I wonder if it ever recovered? If it ever participated on the global stage in any way?

    More like:

Ukraine: “We will stage a counter-attack in Bakhmut very soon.”

Russia: "Could you stop saying that? You're scaring our troops! We're losing 3,000 soldiers per month to your surrender hotline, and they're taking their armored vehicles with them! We need those vehicles to bring back dishwashers and refrigerators to Russia!"

Maybe they are concerned their equipment is easily attacked from there?
