As a Panthers fan I agree with what Colin Cowherd said today. You trade your best WR and draft picks to take CJ Stroud the 2nd best QB in college football? Panthers need to take Bryce Young. More consistent and just a better player. he’s shorter and smaller, so what? He’s a proven winner from a program that wins titles and takes on tough competition week in and week out.
Were I drafting a QB this year I'd agree with your decision. But the answer to your question is simple - job security for those making the draft decisions. The guys making these decisions have to justify the tens of millions being spent on 20 year olds. They will say: "How could I pass up a 6'3 220lb guy with better physical measurable than a 6' 190lb guy?" Very few are willing to go out on a limb and value intangibles like intelligence, grit, processing speed/anticipation or leadership. Those attributes are admittedly harder to quantify, but those who deny the value of intangibles must explain athletes like Tom brady, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Peyton manning or even Jerry Rice (good athlete but nowhere near his productivity). Football needs both better metrics for those intangibles and to actually use/trust them (versus an old school mentality). All of which is not to deny the necessity of physical attributes at most positions, just less important at QB.
That was 20+ years ago and it hasn't happened since. Also, with the rule changes, it'll probably never happen again. No one is going with that model.
So you think Nick Foles was elite? That was 6 years ago and all of them since then have been won by Brady or Mahomes (Stafford snuck in there for one).
Foles played like 5 games that season and he was awesome in the playoffs. They put 41 on the Pats in the Super Bowl. You think Dilfer is doing that? He didn't even throw for 200 yards in a playoff game and averaged less than a passing TD per game. The strong defense with an average QB model is dead. Stafford threw 41 TD's the year he won the SB. Move on.
Foles had a good run in that playoff series. Career so far...62.2% completions, 79 td's to 45 int's Not many teams saying "Nick Foles is the guy" Move on? Yes, I would definitely move on from Nick Foles...lol
New intel from McShay today. It appears that after Carolina picks Young, Houston won't pick a QB and Arizona will likely trade their pick. Then Indy is poised to take...Will Levis in the 4th spot. 5. Seattle Seahawks I have a strong sense Seattle won't leave Round 1 without a quarterback. The more I talk to execs, scouts, coaches and agents, the more I think the Seahawks could be targeting Stroud or even Florida's Anthony Richardson at this spot, depending on who is there. Stroud is 21 years old and Richardson is 20, and the idea is either could sit behind Geno Smith in the short-term and develop into the answer for the long-term. If both are gone, that means either Anderson or Wilson will be there, and I expect that'd be the direction Seattle goes. Multiple sources have told me Georgia defensive tackle Jalen Carter isn't expected be the pick. I don't see Carter falling out of the top 10, but it's reasonable he could slide to the back end of it. One final note on Seattle: If it doesn't take a quarterback at No. 5, keep an eye on Tennessee's Hendon Hooker at No. 20, the team's other first-round slot. He's older (25), but it's another option for a team thinking about the future under center.
