Wisconsin Supreme Court election Tuesday

Weird that although the WI Supreme Court is supposed to be non-partisan, they use elections to choose the judges which means, of course, they are partisan.

 

Don't most/all states elect their Supreme Court members?

Elected or appointed, it's partisan all the way down. Legislatures and the WH want judges who share their vision and policies. The other side acts all high and mighty and screams foul.

 

The more significant aspect of this is that if the liberal justice wins, Wisconsin Supreme Court will likely overturn the extreme gerrymandering done by the legislature.

 

Not sure if they allowed any early voting. I've been watching the weather today generally given the risk of severe weather including tornadoes in some areas of the country. Wisconsin is getting some storms and is forecast to get more throughout the day. It will be interesting to see if the weather impacts turnout.

 

If this holds, it will be very good news for democracy in Wisconsin.

why didn't the dem party get an abortion issue on the ballot in Florida during the last election?

 

Because we still had a right under the U.S. and Florida Constitutions until the summer of 2022. (Technically, we still have that right today, but the First DCA refuses to enforce it.) I don't think people realize just how much planning, time, effort, and money it takes to put together a successful citizens' ballot initiative.

The Florida Democratic Party is pretty useless. But as I've said before, you should expect a reproductive rights amendment to be on the ballot in 2024. And it won't be because the Florida Democratic Party did the work of getting it there.

 

Huge implications. SCOTUS ignored precedent, legislated from the bench, and now here is the consequence. Thank god for democracy!
