The Russians apparently took the city center in Bakhmut and are claiming they control the town. The Ukrainians apparently still have the high ground on the outskirts so they say no. But some form of gains for Russia.

The 300 Wagner troops still alive have limped into Bakhmut center, brandishing only shovels; weak from subsisting on zoo meet and the Russian and Wagner flags are flying above City Hall.

I would say that it is possible, although on the far end of the spectrum. China has its eyes on "North Manchuria", so they might take advantage of the situation if Russia can no longer support the far eastern areas. I do picture the west providing a framework for Russia's financial recovery--hopefully it requires the destruction of Russian weapons factories and dismantling of most of the Russian army. Melt down the tanks and make cars.

The eastern areas are fairly independent people (and they do not get all that much from Russia anyway compared to the western areas). I'm sure they did not enjoy sending their young men off to die for no reason. Russia may have to give up Ukraine earlier than they would like to keep enough troops and equipment to hold their country together. At that point, Putin will be retired and probably erased from the history books.

I'm fairly sure its a big basement. He can go scream in a different part of the basement every hour, and feel like he's accomplishing something.

Russia has suffered up to 200,000 casualties since last summer. Probably from eating tainted zoo animal meat. Still, the very few that remain alive have basically taken the city which has pretty much been Ukraine’s singular obsession for eight months.

Maybe "replace losses" is code for "storm Moscow and burn down the Kremlin". That might not take another 500,000, however. A few thousand more should do it, at the rate the Russian military is getting destroyed.
