Completely fine with this. There's nothing about today's Republican party that makes me think they've been holding back and wouldn't already be prosecuting Democrats if they had anything on them. More generally, shouldn't we want to elect politicians on both sides who aren't committing crimes? Especially if the people committing crimes are the ones writing the laws. They above all else should know better and be held to a higher standard. I just can't get on board with "if we don't let politicians commit crimes the country will crash and burn." This is the kind of thing people say when the chickens come home to roost and they realize they're no longer above the law.

 

Right? Holding public officials responsible for any magnitude of crime they commit sounds marvelous. Please bring it on.

 

Many think the triviality of this case will hurt the GA case. None of them are Trump supporters.

If they charge him with a serious crime and that makes him go away it would make me very happy. If that gives Biden an excuse to not run it would make me ecstatic.
I want a boring competent president who makes some things better. I'm sick of the nonsense.

 

Reading around today, seems the general consensus is that a gag order is coming.
It wouldn’t surprise me at all if out of everything the man has done for 50 years, his inability to keep his mouth shut is what sends him to jail.
Either way, it’s popcorn time if it happens.

 

If it happens, which I suggested might a couple of weeks ago, it will be a very limited order that will only apply to the NY case given the person under that order is a current candidate for president of the US. That, I think, will actually make it more fun to watch. Trump will be busting at the seams not being able to talk or Fake Tweet about it. He'll keep pushing and pushing the envelope until he winds up in a contempt hearing. This will be fun.

 

Once the number 30 or 34 was discussed as the number of counts he was being charged with, I suggested a conspiracy count would be the fastest way to get to that number. Set out the conspiracy with its predicate acts/incidents and charge every co-conspirator with the crimes each of them committed.

We'll know for sure soon enough.

Trump has to go to prison for his crimes especially in the light of the GOP failing to impeach and remove him.

Our electoral system needs to have built in disincentives from criminals getting a free pass on felonies by attaining public office. Nowhere is this more urgent than the presidency. A criminal in that position is the proverbial wolf in the hen house.

 

I think we have two separate issues here, the political and the criminal. I personally agree that Trump should not be ever again in the White House, but this is a political problem that deserves only a political solution. One would think at this point that this solution would enjoy broad consensus, but disappointingly this doesn’t seem to be the case.

However, just because it may be that tribal interests are overpowering national interests in the political realm should not put any extra onus our judicial system to clean up the problem. In fact, this kind of sentiment is exactly what allows some to disregard legal action as mere partisan witch hunting.

I think the ideal is simply for Donald Trump the civilian to be treated just like any other civilian in the eyes of the law. This may include jail, but as is the ideal case for any of us, the system needs to start from the presumption of innocence with Trump. Few of us are experts in these legal arenas, and basically none of us has all the requisite info to currently make these calls, so we must simply rely on the legal system to function as it should, with no bias toward either political side.

 

I think this is exactly right. But also easier said than done.

When politicians or other very powerful people break the law or at the very least get as close to the line as possible, it puts prosecutors in a tough position to be accused of either over-reaching or being scared to hold the rich and powerful accountable. Compounding the complication is that ordinary folks rarely if ever have the potential to be implicated in potential crimes involving fake schools/charities or paying off women in advance of elections.

But I agree with your sentiment about the ideal 100%. If the same factual allegations would not be charged against a city council candidate none of us have ever heard of or a small business owner, they shouldn't be brought against Trump just because he may have done other things. That's not the way the system is supposed to work. I thought the same about Matt Gaetz as well. They're not above the law, but they're not under it either.

 

Well put. You are very right that achieving a fair legal outcome for someone like Donald Trump is easier said than done. Still, we have no superior alternative. Certainly, letting either political party act as judge, jury, and executioner will not often result in fair outcomes. I have no logical method to define a fair outcome for Trump, but I do know it is wrong to determine the fairness of the process based only upon its end result.

 

Yeah, people are arrested, charged and indicted every day. I think at least in some jurisdictions, people are apparently afforded less procedural transparency than in NY, are not allowed to have the option to testify at the grand jury stage, etc.

He's also reportedly not going to be perp walked and handcuffed. Not that I take issue with such accommodations, but I doubt the rest of us would be able to avoid that. The question still remains whether he would have faced a grand jury in the first place if he were anyone other than Trump. I don't know the answer to that. If he's ultimately convicted by a jury, it will be tough to argue that the charges lacked merit. If he's found not guilty, it's going to lend some credence to the notion that one can indict a ham sandwich and it never should have gone this far.

 

That would be worth it if it taught him some humility... but I'm not holding my breath on that one.

 

If the polls went that way in the popular election it would result in a more massive landslide for the Democrats than the last one. And to think, the Pubs have been thanking Bragg for it. LOL
