Interesting. Dusty May wanted to quit hours after signing FAU contract; now he's coached Owls to improbable Final Four run
I'm interested to see how San Diego State's strength, perimeter defense, plays against FAU's (is it a five-out?) offense, which is really good at penetration & kick to open shooters. FAU gets so many wide open looks against good defenses (see TN). They are really hard to defend.
i agree. It’s a very interesting matchup, putting strength -v- strength. The Owls have shown the ability to have any number of different players step-up and hit shots. And that is why they are so tough. Owls do not run a 5-out, as both Goldin and Rosado play a traditional center role. The other 4 spots are “positionless” … w any combination of guards Boyd, Gaffney, Davis, Greenlee, Forrest, Martin Weatherspoon. Nearly all of em are good shooters.
First the obvious. They lost the game on the offensive boards. 8 offensive boards within a few minutes just can't happen. Can't blame the refs and San Diego missed a ton of free throws but I absolutely despise fouls called on the presumption of contact. It's a tough sport to ref because of how fast it moves but FAU had 2 totally bogus fouls called toward the end. One a clean block and the other no contact on a missed layup but a foul was still called. Can't blame refs but when they struggled as bad as they did on the boards the bad calls were too much. Still though they had a chance.
Competitive game. But I did not see anything in either team that will win on Monday. It was fun while it lasted.
I'm happy for Dusty May, but happier that FAU is not in position to win a national championship. Now Miami needs to lose and lose big. I'm selfish; I want the Gators to be the only Florida team to have ever won a national championship.
Good post, but I'd say you absolutely can blame the refs. They were inconsistent from first to second half and then as you mentioned made a couple really bad calls near the end that put SanD in position to win. Goldin's fourth foul was one of them. True that if FAU just boxes out one of those missed FTs that they probably win, but the refs were jobbing them late in the second half.
Yeah I'm trying my best not to blame them but truth be told Goldins 4th and a quick follow up with another blown call on SDSUs missed layup where there was literally no contact really killed an opportunity for FAU to withstand SDSUs push. Was hard to watch an undermanned team get dealt like that
I can't even watch the Miami game because I dislike them so much. I'll be a happy camper if they lose but I don't have anything against FAU....for now.
It was a great game. You want a lousy game, go ask UAB. That was the worst post-season game in history. I'm glad our Gators didn't get that far because we would have been shafted by Vegas.
Miami goes down. The Universe is back in alignment, and I'll cheer loudly for SDSU against UConn (pronounced "You Con").
