Local school on lockdown due to shooting threat. Both of my nephews were kept home from school today. Even with "secured" schools this kind of crap will keep happening. Warped ass society

It’s sick, a hit on a 9 year old. I suppose in some ways it’s better than if she just targeted the school itself. Law enforcement deserves credit for the ultimate takedown of this psycho, but if this person went in trying to kill everyone rather than “targets” the outcome likely would have been much worse before law enforcement could have responded. Could have easily been another Sandy Hook, or worse.

Tennessee state Rep. says they won’t fix it and there isn’t a role for them. References his ‘daddy’ fighting Japan in WW 2 for justification. Actually appreciate his honesty that (these) leaders will not review and discuss ideas to help the situation. (he mentioned his kids are home schooled)

“It’s a horrible, horrible situation,” Burchett told reporters. “And we’re not gonna fix it. Criminals are gonna be criminals……I don’t think you’re gonna stop the gun violence,” the congressman said. “I think you gotta change people’s hearts.”

It's like the excuse makers on this board. "It's too hard!" is an epic fail of intellect and imagination when confronted by the efforts of other first world countries. So much for American exceptionalism.

Burchett should be run out of office by his constituents for being a limp noodle do-nothing. Pathetic.

    Who are "they?"

I'm well aware of a specific set of Republicans who just like acting as these roadblocks to getting anything done. The Speaker McCarthy fiasco is a great example. But I don't think that is representative of the party as a whole.

Republicans have a real identity crisis on their hands. They don't seem to know who they are or who they want to be as a whole, it's just a bunch of people riding the party name to victory with dramatically different ideals, principles, and priorities.

I'm happy to have "some" conversation on gun control and "some" conversation on school safety.

But when the conversation almost immediately shifts to one side standing on the graves of dead children pointing the finger at the other, it becomes awfully clear that this is about the ugliest form of political grandstanding, not a good-faith discussion on how to address the problem.

Also, calling for "some" conversation about anything doesn't make you a hero.

Why call for a conversation? Nothing will ever change. Not much to discuss.

No point in discussing it. Gun nuts aren't willing to budge. We live in a shit hole country now. Get comfortable.

Odd innit that one side literally has " you can have my guns when you pry my dead, cold fingers...." as their start position, but the poster faults the other side for concern over dead children. Telling, I'd say.

Politicians politicking is all. Don't give 2 sh*ts about anything except oneself and party. Society? Children? The Nation? Not on the agenda. Might get in the way of hunting at the Ole Boys club.

Besides it would hurt the funeral home bizness.

Sadly this bullshit with the mass shootings appears to be baked in as part of modern American life. ( in before the love it or leave it crap gets tossed out.. you can put that where the sun does not shine; you can love your country and want to make it better at the same time).

If these politicians were the ones falling victim of random attacks they would adapt immediately and stop holding public sessions. They'd figure something out to save their own sorry asses.

And this is in no way a suggestion or call for that to occur.

I was referring to the NRA. Here's an article on the intransigence in the Republican party over gun control, due to the core GOP base that decides primaries and the contributions by the NRA. Why Republicans Won’t Budge on Guns

Warped ass society is correct, but it’s not warped because of guns. It’s warped because of the people.

In part. It's also warped because people value their guns over kids. Disagree all you want.

Why does the number start really increasing in 2017? That’s discouraging.

Evidently this particular shooter valued playing dress up over kids lives…

Not really. Am I valuing people having a drink over my kids if I don’t think someone who’s guilty of a DUI should never be able to drive again legally?
