I was in a meeting today with an administrator from the Provost's office. Apparently UF had to turn down a lot of qualified candidates because there just isn't enough room. Applicants aren't just being measured against a standard, but measured against other applicants.

They were trying to game the USNWR system. I am guessing she had great grades and some real other things like science fair awards. UF put WAY too much emphasis on SAT scores because that was one USNWR metric that they could control. Little did they know that a huge part of the rankings are peer evaluations and the "top" schools always give high rankings to each other. It is an old boys network. It takes forever to get through that.

So maybe the standard needs to be raised?

I don’t think raising the standards will increase the number of students accepted. It would require a major increase in money for facilities and faculty to increase capacity. Of course there might be some in Tallahassee who would like 50,000 STEM majors instead of all those pesky humanities and social sciences students and faculty

Not to disrupt this scintillating conversation, but Jarvis announces his decision tomorrow, right after visiting us. Not sure who else he has visited.

I've watched some video. He's got quite a good set of scoring skills. Nice post moves, plus a 3-point shot. Not huge, but he'll make a good power forward or small forward. Be a Gator, EJ.

Given what he used at San Fran and what he has brought in and/or targeted since coming here, feels like Golden really wants longer, athletic 3/4s who are switchable defensively and can rebound their positions well. Of course he wants shooting across the board, but he doesn't seem quite as enamored of stretch 4s or smaller swingmen.

I'm not usually enamored of the "stretch 4" either, because most don't seem to shoot as well as advertised. Once in a while, though, you get an Erik Murphy that can really shoot from 3.

I don’t care what the positions are, but if you have guys you are letting shoot as “volume” shooters they need to be hitting somewhere near 40%. Anything below 33% and they shouldn’t be shooting so many 3’s, down in the 20’s and it becomes a negative to a productive offense. For a big it should determine how they are functioning in the offense. A big that can shoot 40% you want running the pick and pop game. That’s a matchup nightmare, esp if they have just a little skill to go inside and outside. A big that can’t shoot, you want them getting post ups or working hard around the basket - and they better be effective there or they are basically just taking up space.

I know of someone who got into Harvard (legacy), but didn’t get into Florida. However, she got into UF on her second try.

Declaring a major is not required, but there is a box for it. He was accepted to FL Poly with an $8,000 scholarship offer.

Now bring in Clayton and Cohen, and retain Kugel. I'll be feeling really good about next season if that happens.

Haven't heard a further peep about Cohen. Don't know that we are all in on him. He has been to Penn St and UMass since our in-home.
